Honda 2.2 Diesel Engines
Discussion
Evening all,
I've been looking at Honda Civics with the 2.2 CDTI diesel engine in. I know the reliability of the petrol engines is almost legendary, but what of the diesel? The power and torque look more than adequate, as do the emissions, and insurance figures. Are they any good?
Thanks,
AB

The 2.2 isn't unknown to eat turbos and the exhaust manifold is quote common to crack in the accord
Oh and change the fuel filer on each and every service no matter what it sayes in the service schedule
The 1.7 is an isuzu engine

My parents have the 1.7 honda diesel unit in their 54 plate civic. In six years ownership they have had no faults at all. So based on a single data point honda diesels are reliable.......

Apart from 1 tiny little flaw your logic is faultlessMike

The missus drove an '07 Accord with the 2.2CDTI for 2 years, and from 18k to 68k (right until the car was wiped out by a lorry on the M25)
Faultless engine. Not the quietest at idle (but hey, it's still a tractor engine). Excellent motorway MPG, decent enough pull and a reasonable amount of derv-torks if you like that sort of engine! Nothing but excellent things to say really.

Ours spat the clutch out at 23k miles. Never lost a clutch in under 100k miles before. Fuel economy wasnt anything special to be honest. Started on the button and did things quite boringly in our accord. Clutch master cylinder gave grief too. Had more wheels through corrosion than tyres in the 4 years we had it, all replaced by Honda. Clutch was a goodwill gesture from Honda, but still cost us £600 to fix.
Can only speak from my experience but I think it's a great engine.
Had my 2.2 Civic from new & haven't had any engine issues 115k miles later. It's more than adequate performance-wise & I prefer it to the 140bhp VAG Tdi unit. Has a much smoother power delivery than the massive kick in the arse you get with the Tdi.
Economy's good if you're sensible. I average 46ish mpg at 90+ on the motorway & 50+mpg is easily manageable if you stick to reasonable speeds. I can NEVER get less than 40mpg out of a tank, no matter how I drive it!
Only thing to look for is the weak clutch mentioned above. It's a common fault & mine was replaced under warranty at 40 odd thousand miles.
Aside from that, you could do a lot worse.

I withdraw the 'bombproof' comment...
Not many engines are 'bombproof' if you take the anecdotal response of a couple of people as gospel - just how many 2.2 CDTi engines have been sold...I'm looking at the accord and a few others and it's reliability is one of the stronger points.

Wifey has had 2 Jazz's so I'm familiar with how reliable Honda's usually are, but the Accord diesel is well known for all the issues mentioned already. We had a couple of early ones at work and the fuel consumption (compared to the A4's & 3 Series diesels we had) was terrible.I'm looking at the accord and a few others and it's reliability is one of the stronger points.
The ABS issue is more common than the one occurance mentioned here: http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/honda/accord-...
Honda have a good reputation for looking after customers who bought new and have full dealer service history, but I imagine as the car's history gets a bit iffy then you're probably on your own.
Not the most refined unit available and you can hear the rushing of air from the turbo in the cabin at times, but it's a strong engine and pulls the civic along really well. I think the civic absolutely flies with this engine in.
Not sure on the economy, but I imagine it's pretty decent. Think my mate gets 50+ out of it. Mostly motorway.
Head over to civinfo forums. Lots of
Good info on there. Also some horror stories like some guys 2.2 spitting the sump on the ground. But afterall it's a specific model forum so attracts more
Moaning than usual.
Common moans are that the clutch is made of cheese and the diesel feels under braked. Needs some bigger stoppers. Interior is a creaky, squeaky, rattly, wobbly and under sound proofed piece of tat made from melted wheelie bins. But it does look great. Thankfully seating position is good and the leather clad wheel on the higher spec models is really lovely to hold. Get a car on the boggo 16" wheels unless you like a rock hard jiggly ride.
(this is my experience from having a 1.8 civic for 2 years now. Mechanically sound, awesome design, but not Hondas finest moment re build quality)

This engine was not their best moment according to Google searches and Honest John...
You're joking. This has been one of the best engines to be built in a long, long time. Ok so the 'hate something, change something' ad was a bit cheesy but back in 2004/5 this engine changed the way most manufacturers went about producing theirs as Honda made them all sound like stone age technology in one fell swoop. And this was their first attempt at a smoker.
OP
I've owned a Civic and Accord and whilst it's more hushed in the Accord is still great in the Civic. It's quiet, refined, revs freely, has a great gearbox and doesn't suffer the ridiculous surge of torque that characterises so many engines today. I find it's the most petrol like diesel I've driven and that's great, given I hate diesel.
I bought one of the first Civics and was very dissapointed with the fuel consumption from new. After 12k miles it was only averaging 40mpg, which was poor, even on a long run. My Accord, on the other hand, has now got about 50k on the clock and is easily getting 55mpg if you drive sensibly and don't floor it everywhere. So I'm guessing it does improve with age. A mate at work has a tourer with about 100k and is getting up to 60mpg so it's possible there's some truth in it.
We've got a 56plate civic with the 2.2 and a 10 plate A6 with the 2.0 170. The Civic feels a bit quicker and I think it is slightly on paper. I prefer it to the VAG. Never had any issues with the engine, averages 45mpg on a normal commute, lovely engine to leave in 6th gear and surf the torque wave using the cruise control :, it is a little laggy, but in a charming way. It is clattery at idle but sounds like a weird purring spaceship when driving. I like it, shame the chassis is a bit wobbly.
