thinking on doing the standard airbox mod with a cold air feed on my ep3 already altho i have only had it for 2days. it seems to be better than a open cone and a lot of ep3 owners have been happy with it.but once its done where do i get an upgrade filter from the only one i can find is k&n filter on ebay are they any good or is there a cheaper but same kind thanks ben

Could you elaborate on this "standard airbox mod" please, I'm not sure which "standard" mod this is. FWIW, Spoon recommend not altering the Honda airbox but only upgrading the filter inside, reason being the Honda airbox does a good job at maximising throttle response already.

The hardpipe induction kits like the K&N Typhoon sound good but will increase the flow of warm air into the engine, which will dull throttle response and reduce power. Not as drastically as on a turbo, but it will happen - Honda would have used an open cone filter if it was the best option.

The best induction kit you can get, that maintains throttle response and increase real cold air flow into the engine is a Tegwia or Gruppe M scoop induction kit, which sits on the scuttle panel of your car (that you will have to cut and modify to get the kit to fit) and they are not cheap. The Tegiwa is £350, the Gruppe M is at least double that.

But please, tell me more about this "standard airbox mod" because I'm not sure I've heard of it before.

well i seen it on the honda type r owners forum. its where u get a hand axe saw or a dremmel and cut the wall that sections of in the airbox and u use a snips to cut some of the ridges on the side and sand them flush but dont cut all of them of as you need some of them to help the air travel then use a cold air feed pipe from the bottom to the grill using jubilee clip to hold it on the bottom intake of the air box u got to remove a small bracket thats on the slam panel infront of the airbox to get it up to the grill then a tidy upgrade filter or a standard one and it suppost to do wonders a cheap and successful upgrade it supposed to be i just had a good read of it on the forum so thought i try it but i want to get a upgraded filter to go inside it so would a k&n one be tidy enough.its on www.hondata.com sumwhere to

Do you have a link to a "how to" guide on a Honda forum?

I may change the induction on my EP3 next year, possibly to a Blitz Advance Power kit, which is an induction cone with a built in heat shield. We'll see how it goes, I've got a bloody blowing manifold to sort first, joy!

Heatshield or not, an open cone filter is a bad idea on EP3's due to the location right at the back of the engine bay, you will just end up losing power with the bonnet shut

i tried the Airbox mod, and then fitted a Gruppe-M induction kit on my EP3

with KPro maps for both, on the same dyno, the Airbox mod made 212bhp and the Gruppe-M made 232bhp

as we know, dyno figures should be taken with a pinch of salt! however, i'd always recommend the Gruppe-M or Gruppe-M replicas as the best for power enhancing!

Also, the noise on crossover to VTEC is unreal!
