hi guys i recently put a thread out for buying a ep3 well i finally bought one yesterday cosmic grey ex condition from a dealer full honda dealer history the only problem i realised when i got on the m5 on my way home in it i realised the vtec wasnt the aggressive that i thought or maybe im not hitting the vtec it will only rev to 7500k then limit and another thing the speedo will only go up to 70mph and i was going slightly quicker than that so with my speedo being faulty will that effect the vtec or do i have vtec and it isnt that aggressive on a ep3 im not that worried about cost because i got a 3month any garage or dealer warranty and i phoned the dealer and he sed just to bill it to them if it was any extra cost to them any help or suggestions guys i been told it the speed sensor could affect it thanks ben

Check the oil for sure, Type Rs can lose their oomph when the oil level drops to halfway between full and empty on the dipstick, also have a look at the colour of the oil, if it's dark and dirty then get it changed straight away - keep in mind you can't use any old tat in these either, it needs to be a specific kind, someone else will know the exact stuff.

My car has gone flat, I changed the oil as a first measure (doesn't hurt to give these cars regular oil changes) and then found out it's got a blow between the manifold downpipe and the catalytic converter so by the time you get to 5000rpm it's out of puff and VTEC kick is so weak you can feel it. To answer another of your questions, yes the VTEC kick is fairly strong in the EP3, though the newer Type Rs like the EP3 are supposed to be less "Jekyll and Hyde" than the older Japanese imports like the EK9, it's still a noticeable surge of power and the induction note changes dramatically.

Consider signing up to www.type-r-owners.co.uk as they have a few guys who really know there stuff on there and might be able to give you some more specific advice. Whatever happens, I'd make sure the dealer is sorting it through the warranty, thats one of the reasons to buy from a dealer in the first place!

Get onto the Civic owners forum, there will be a post that will explain the exact issue and what you need to do to ratify it.

I'd say you're on the right lines with it, I've got an Integra that had the same issue. Oil was fine but the Vehicle Speed Sensor was faulty and would engage VTEC in 1st a bit late. So basically if it malfunctions it won't engage VTEC or it will a bit later on oronly in higher gears. It's something like £140 new from Honda for the DC2, no idea on the EP3.
