Prelude: 2.0 vs. 2.2VTEC - Insurance!

Looking at Prelude's - choice is quite limited because I'm after a 5th gen manual and would quite like Motegi edition if possible.
My dilemma is this: insurance for the 2.2 VTEC is almost double that of the 2.0l at around £2k. And I want to limit the amount of money I waste on insurance to £1000 at the most.
While I'd quite like to experience and own my first VTEC engine, it seems I may have to wait a few more years. So should I buy the 2.0 VTI variant or shelve plans to buy the Prelude?
A few more questions:
1. Is there anything else I should look at? MX-5 is obvious contender but I'd prefer a Prelude.
2. Has anyone under/around 21 insured a 5th gen Prelude under a classic policy? Who with and how much does it cost?

There is no 2.0VTI variant. The 2 litre Prelude uses the F20 engine, a non VTEC engine and isn't a particularly quick car. When I was looking to buy my Prelude I was doubtful there could be much of a difference between the two engines until I took them both for a test-drive and there's a huge difference, if you're after a VTEC engine and settle for the 2.0 you'll be forever wishing you stumped up the cash for the 2.2vti.

So far I've got around £1900 with Admiral as the best quote. The quote for 2-litre is just over £1,000. Who are you with? I'm of a similar age with 2 years NCB too.Just to clarify - all UKDM 2.0 models are non-VTEC and all 2.2 models are VTEC - is that correct?

I went with Adrian Flux for my first year with it then Sky came in cheaper this year. I live in a pretty bad postcode rating with 3 points too, I'm surprised you're being quoted those prices. I've looked into classic policies and ran into the age buffers too so have given up searching. If you managed to take out out a classic policy under 25 I imagine you'd have very restricted mileage so could forget using it as a daily.Shop around and don't be afraid to pick the phone up, online quotes aren't all that accurate.
In answer to your earlier question ALL 2.0 Preludes are non VTEC engines, there are two varients of the 2.2 models, the H22 engine and the F22 engine, the H22 being the most common engine pushing 185bhp (1997-1998 black top cars) or 197bhp (1999-2001 red top cars), the red tops being the more sought after. The F22, I think, was a JDM only engine so it's unlikely you'll see one on our roads.
I can't recommend the Prelude enough as a car to own, a hidden gem for the performance and reliability on offer for their prices as well as being quite rare too. I would honestly wait until you can own a 2.2 as I reckon you'd be let down with the 2 litre.

This isn't going to happen thanks to my insurer. Currently insured for £800 p.a. on a 1.4l hatchback. For a 2.2 VTI Prelude they want £2000!
Might look at the MX-5 but it's sad that I probably won't get a chance to own a Prelude as they're getting older and older - really would have been awesome to own the car I grew to love so much on Gran Turismo 4 as a teenager!

one thing i will say about the H22 engine...make sure you get a well looked after one, as they can be a pig of an engine to get parts for and tend to be expensive! (In Honda terms)
I had a JDM H22A from a 4th Gen Prelude Si-VTEC (197bhp Blacktop, JDM only) fitted into my Civic Coupe, and it was utterly amazing!
I'd honestly hold out for the 2.2 aswell, the F20 is brutally slow...especially since the car is quite heavy!

I too am having issues with insuring a 2.2 vtec lude. Looking at buying another 4th gen BB1. My last one cost me £1200 to insure, that was 3 years ago with 1 year ncb and a fault claim on file. Now I have 3 years ncb, no claims on file and I have a daily driver so this would be a weekend toy. My quotes are still coming back at around £2k, all for a £700 car!
