Hi

I am posting on behalf of a friend who is not yet a member.

I'm sure the PH masses can come up with something.

Ok so the car in question is 2002 Honda Integra type R with about 85k miles on the clock.

He had just parked the car in a carpark and came back to it about for 4hrs later to find it would not start and when it did, it only moved about 5feet before conking out. he said the car was running AOK up until then however the emissions light was on.

He has since taken it to a garage who said 'The belt has skipped a couple of teeth?!' due to lack of oil and that the valves may be bent....

I have broken enough engines to realize that they tend to give some sought of indication that they are dying.

Ideas? because they want £1400 to fit a new engine.

The belt skipping is unlikely as it's chain driven. Tell the garage to FOAD and go somewhere that knows what they're talking about.

As for the problem have you checked the usual stuff? Oil level, check the AFM isn't clogged up with any gunk as that can cause running problems.

It's rare for cambelts to jump but I've had it happen.

Maybe I was lucky because I just timed it correctly and all was fine.

I'd certainly try that first.

As already mentioned, the K20 in the DC5 is chain driven, so it won't be this.

And to be frank, I really wish some people would use just a little bit of logic when trying to diagnose a problem. If a garage said to me that a car had slipped a belt because the oil was low, I'd actually ask them what it was that had led them to believe I was retarded. How in the name of god could low oil possible cause a slipped belt? Absolute piss takers of the highest order. In fact, they might as well have called your friend a to his face, whilst handing him a tub of vaseline...

Again, as already mentioned, tell them to pull someone else's pants down, and get yourself (or your friend) signed up on here: www.itr-dc5.com. Great bunch of people, and I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction.

This is the latest.

Just spoken to my mate, he said 'the mechanic rang him and said that diagnostics indicated that the chain had skipped' and that basically the valves are hitting the pistons.

I think he should get the car back off him

Any update on this?

Has you mate taken it elsewhere?

I'm no expert but I'd say you'd have a hard time buying the engine on its own for £1400 let alone fitting it too. Sounds to me like they found something a lot simpler to fix but reckon they can take your mate for bit of moolah.

Low oil can cause the chain to jump as the chain tensioner works on oil pressure if the level low it does not tension the chain properly and can cause it to jump, seen it many times on the civic typr R engine, and the teeth on the tensioner also wear causing the teeth to slip an de adjust the chain, not sure if that engine hits the valves . you may be luckly and it jumped 5 or 6 teeth, what DTC code do you have, if the chain has jumped the code usually is CMP CKP relation railure
