Hi,

The clutch on my Type R is pretty badly worn now. Honda want 750 to replace. No thanks.

I regularly use a trusted independent who'll do it for me if I supply the parts.

So, can anyone recommend me a kit and place to buy from?

It doesn't have to be better than OEM, just so long as it's of a good standard.

Cheers.

Clutch eh? Unlucky, it's not a cheap or quick job - expect not to see the car for a whole day! What's wrong with it? Let me guess: Dragging a bit when you select first? Bit heavy? Hard to change at high revs?

I looked around for an alternative kit but couldn't find anything noticeably cheaper than the Honda kit, so I just got my local independent to do it and it still cost around £450 all in (I was quoted £585 by Honda?) - but he did get me a genuine Honda clutch kit and used genuine Honda gearbox oil for that money too.

Think the clutch kit was around £180 and the gbox oil £40 from the Honda parts desk, plus 6 hrs labour. Or Something like that.

You're in Bristol aren't you? Where are you getting it done out of interest?

It's not technically an OEM clutch as the OEMs are made by Daikin but here you go

Oh and whilst the clutch is out, slip an OEM LSD from a DC5 in there too. Thank me later

Thanks for the shouts guys.

Yep, I'm in Bristol - I guess you picked up on the thread re. Senna? Incidentally I saw the film today at Vue Cribbs.

The gears are harder to select when changing down, the clutch is very heavy and selecting third is particularly bad.

Unfortunately, as you say, it's a labour intensive job rather than the cost of the parts being a problem. I'll ring the Honda dealer tomorrow to get a price on the parts.

I've only got the car until its replacement arrives in November and I probably wouldn't bother, but I'm due for a private track day at the Nurburgring in 4 weeks time. I think I'd go mental if there was a mechanical failure after a few laps.

The garage I use is Phoenix Motorsport - http://www.phoenixmotorsports.co.uk/ - they're based in Lancashire but I use them when home visiting family. They're a Lotus specialist, but will work on most things, and they're familiar with the K20 engines because they're used to sticking them in Elises etc. Labour wise they're not bad at all, but I use them mostly because they're completely trustworthy - kind of an old school, pitbull in the corner in a kennel, fag in mouth, kind of place. That, and they know their stuff.

Cheers.

The guys at TGM race DC5's and their cars are pushing approx 270bhp. They used the OEM clutch in one of the Brit Car events (24hrs) and it lasted the event without any problem. The following year they were offered an uprated clutch that cost £1k and that started to go wrong half way through the event...

Exedy do a clutch which is slightly cheaper than the OEM, maybe £30 less. To be honest if it were me, I'd just go with an OE.

Avoid Exedy clutch, get a OEM one.

Thanks guys.

He rang back today - cost of clutch plus £250 labour, but will do an oil and brake fluid change included within the labour cost.

I just need to source the clutch now.

ETA: 215 quid from Honda parts desk. I'll go with that.
