I am currently looking for a new car, and I had pretty much decided on a Volvo T5 of some sort, until I realised that Accord Type Rs were actually less to insure!

Having trawled the classifieds, the only ones that I can afford (around £2k) seem to be at the bottom of the market.

Now, I know nothing about Hondas, apart form the fact that they are reliable.

Would buying a 120k + Type R be a bad idea and just asking for trouble?

Or are these cars known to run to silly mileages with good maintenance?

What are the common faults on these cars?

Just an idea I am playing with at the moment, but any input would be greatly appreciated smile

My ATR has just ticked over to 120k miles, it's a 2000 pre facelift.

I've had it since last summer and put it through 1 MoT, in which it failed on rear brake lines. Cost me £200 to get new lines fitted.

It's also had new anti roll bar droplinks fitted front and rear, but they are only £15 for the pair per end and a simply DIY fix.

The engine uses a cambelt and needs changing every 72k miles or 8 years. Also needs regular oil changes (every 6k is recommended) and a good quality oil should be used, I use 5w40 fully synth Silkolene or Motul.

5th gear can be problematic on these as the synchro wears, there was some kind of recall on them and most should have been sorted, but check it goes into gear ok.

The interior has a few rattles, but then again the car has no sound deadening and runs low profile tyres and stiff springs.

I really do like the way it drives, it could do with a 6th gear in my opinion but the engine is strong and pulls well enough.

My car has just had a 171k service, oil and filter change and everything given the once over. This included cleaning the EGR valve and VTEC solenoid. As it was leaking a little oil.

The car stills pull strong and has only had a clutch under warranty at 45k miles. Its had another clutch change at 152k, 2 cambelts ( but only 1 with water pump and all the balancers etc).

It has been a pleasure to own, as stated above only things are 5th gear syncro of pre-facelift cars, headlight level sensor things.

My does 30mpg no matter which way you drive it (within reason).

Cons, a little noise on the motorway, seats do not fold down.

I am considering changing the dampeners, oh and it has had one set of drop links at the front at about 161k.

Anything just ask.

Edit, on the shed of the week thread there was a chap with a 200k+ car that get track abuse and is still going strong.

Mines just ticked over 128k, and feels alot better than cars I've driven with much lower mileage.

Engine pulls well and if you didn't look at the odometer you'd not think it had done what it has. I'm really impressed with the ride quality as well considering the sporting setup, certainly alot better than my old Alfa which rolled like a boat in comparison as well as being more uncomfortable.

Go for it I say, I was also surprised at the insurance considering the performance! thumbup

I miss my ones. I was lucky enough to own 2 examples. A pre-facelift (Silver) and a facelift (Red). Both had similar miles when bought (around 70K) and pulled very well. Both had FHSH which was good and the Silver one was fine although my Red one needed 4 springs, which we fitted with 40mm drop aftermarket springs.

My old one.

Very good handling saloon and performed very well. My mate had a Leon Cupra R at the time and it was about the same performance which surprised me.

Here is my Honda Accord type R in Silver. The car is in good condition and has always been maintained regardless of cost - previously owned by BT as a Fleet car.

Like most 10 year old cars there is the odd mark/ scuff (Please see photo's) and small dent on the front passenger-side wing, the bonnet is showing signs of slight fade but nothing that detracts from this stunning car.

I initially bought this car to modify for track days but get no time for this. Car has been well maintained and run on Shell V-Power.

This model is equipped with: Recaro sports seats, Xenon headlamps, Air conditioning (optional extra), Front fog lamps (optional extra), Electric windows and mirrors, JVC CD player, Dual Airbags, 17inch Alloy wheels and MOMO steering wheel.

I installed a new Bosch battery 1 year ago.

The car has some aftermarket upgrades:

Full K&N Typhoon Intake System.
Black Diamond Drilled and grooved discs all around.
Black Diamond Brake Pads.
Full Stainless Steel Twin Exhaust + Sports De-cat.
Goodridge Braided Brake Lines - all around.
NRG Earthing Kit.

There is a book of receipts and old MOT's to back up all the service history too. The car is running flawless - VTEC is very potent and comes in as it should. Gearbox is good - no crunches.

Road Tax expires January 2012 MOT expires 20/12/2011 HPI clear.

The car mainly only gets run to and from work, which is 20 miles each way... so its a bit of a waste of a nice car!!

The car has just passed 100,000 miles which is average for a car of this age. Mechanically the car is a cracker - Bullet proof engine - with Honda reliability.

I have been totally honest and will price it fairly.

I am a Honda enthusiast and have had many Honda's in the past.

£2300

Powertrain (synchro aside) unlikely to cause any problems.

At 100k plus (and at the age they're at), look out for:-
- tired/split bushes
- tired dampers
- rust
- coolant system (stiff/splitting hoses, damaged radiator fins, corrosion)

...i.e. the usual age/mileage related stuff that running a 10yr/100k car will encounter. Electrics and trim should be better than average, being a Honda.
