2023 Honda Type R - FL5 availability
Discussion
Great to see other owners using these cars properly!
In terms of the traction / stability control, the only way I can find to disable it all is to have it in Type R mode and then a prolonged press of the button until you get a double chime and the message that all stability control has been disabled. In other modes, including individual, it won’t let you do that and only allows you to press it which I think only disables the traction control element (so you will still end up with the rear brakes being “grabbed” as part of its stability control system).
I prefer the steering in comfort mode - certainly Type R mode is artificially stiff in my opinion. Interesting comment on the sound as I put my individual engine sound setting into comfort to get rid of that stupid noise but maybe the sport mode is worth experimenting with. There is a fix to disable the fake audio engine sound altogether but requires some disassembly of the interior panels.
For 18” wheels, there are some Enkeis which look relatively similar. One of the problems is the offset - you need a 9.5J width but moving from the OE offset of ET60 to anything lower than an ET45 is probably going to cause arch problems especially if you fit a more track focused tyre.
I will be interested to hear feedback on the brake temperature sensor warning and also the OE tyres. I will say that despite the temperature warning light, the brakes perform v well on circuit with very minimal fade. The tyres on the other hand, not so much……

Agreed, good to read some performance related chat.
Here is a video RE disabling traction control - https://youtu.be/leHl00ErHL4
Edit - I just tried this in individual mode and it worked!
RE sound, total guesswork, but my theory is Sport has the valve in its loudest position without the fake speaker sound.
Good feedback RE wheel size. I’ll probably wait for someone to get it right and follow their lead![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)
What pressures did you run on track?

Interesting re VCS and TC disabling video. I wonder if that differs at all from the “all off” prolonged press that only works in a type R mode…..
In terms of the wheels, I got some Enkei Gtc02 which I used on track on its second circuit outing with some Yokohama A052s running 265/35 18s. The combination was great but the tyres do wear quickly. Grip on a mixed wet/dry day was fantastic and way better than the stock setup which I suspect would be fine on a fully wet day. Having said that, I tracked an FK8 with Conti Sport contact 7s (not the OE, earlier 6s) and I thought they were better than than the PS4S both on a full fry day and an absolutely soaking Oulton Pk. In terms of pressure I tried to keep them just a few PSI below the stock recommended pressures when hot. Yoko give some good guidance for their tyres.
I also noticed the ride was better with the 18s on the road, even though the Yokos have a fairly stiff sidewall.
We should organise a U.K. owner’s track day!

Apparently VCS is still active, even in Type R mode with “all off”. I remember at the launch some of the journalists highlighting the fact Sergio Perez doing some sort of pedal dance to disable everything. Thanks for the feedback.
Definitely up for a track day! Off to Germany next month for a long driving weekend.
That's very interesting re the Conti sport's , I have a C63 507 that has Conti sport 5's as OE , and I went through quite a few sets (especially the rears) before deciding to give the fabled PS4's a go , and I haven't been that impressed with them tbh, traction is worse than the conti's dry or wet and everything else feels similar though they do seem to last longer probably because they don't launch as well as the Contis.
Roll on to this year and my Type-R's arrival on PS4's and my impressions are similar, traction is poor in the wet/damp , but lateral grip is very good wet or dry - as it should be with 265 section all round on a lightweight car! - for reference the C63 has 255/30 19's at the rear and 235/35 19's at the front and it weighs probably 350Kg more!
Will see how I get on at first few track days and then maybe look at dedicated track wheel/tyres.

Well you're going to struggle with traction on a 330bhp FWD car in cool weather regardless. Never found the Conti SC5 to be a match in any way for a PS4 (Or even the older MP Supersport)
Ran the original Contis on my first FK8 then replaced with superior PS4S - better grip and feel and miles longer lasting.
Though as said here the new SC7 may be even better. Certainly improved my FK8.
OEM Conti’s on FK8 had nothing on the MP4S. The front end grip and feel was just marginal better on the Conti’s, but the wear rate horrendous, mine were bald at 3k mileage, I think I got around 9k on the MP4S.
Will see how I get on with them on the FL5, suspect other options are better now.

Yes the OE Contis (Sport Contact 6) on the FK8 we’re not great hence I decided to take a punt after reading various reviews on Continental’s new Sport Contact 7s. I’ve been a fan of the Michelin PS4S for road use so I was expecting to be disappointed but the SC7s were miles better than the 6s.
One thing to watch out for guys, this generation of Civic outside of Canada has no low washer fluid warning! and the tanks in the wing you can't see it, I ran out the other day, I had topped it up a couple of times since I've had it but it only took 2 litres or so , so thought I had likely only used half the tank, but it is only around 2 litres (Canada gets 4.5l) , I had been lucky the previous times. A bit mean really (kind of thing Ford do) , and this obsession with minimising the fuel and washer tank capacities is weird , you can run with half a tank if you're that worried about weight.

Yep, the same thing happened to me with washer fluid - in fact I think when I checked it only takes 1.5L!
I have had ShatterX applied to the screen which makes an incredible difference.
Milltek exhaust needs to go on now!
Will be interested to know how you find the Milltek, I'm in two minds , the car is far too quiet outside - but I may be the only person who doesn't mind the fake engine noise.I have had ShatterX applied to the screen which makes an incredible difference.

It’s not gone on yet but Dream appear to have basically found no real difference, which is what I would expect. It’s lighter than stock. As for the fake engine noise, that’s a matter of personal choice but I find it atrocious in a performance internal combustion engine car. I’ve coded it out of previous cars that have had it. Surely you want to hear what the engine is doing, not something through the stereo? Or maybe I’m just getting old……
I'm currently strongly considering the new FL5. I have a DC2 integra which ive had for 14 years and also own a Lexus ISF amongst some smaller cars.
Im toying with the idea off selling the ISF and DC2 for FL5. Anyone around the northwest / yorkshire area will for me to have a poke around there FL5?
