Who knows what these "swords" you see lately on Pro Mods are for?
Is it really to break the beams earlier at the end so the distance seems shorter?

Hey Eric! They put on this device so they reach the maximum permitted overhang measured from front wheel centerline. It can make the difference between win or loose.

Which is quite something when you consider that 200 mph is about 100 yards a second!

Anything not specifically forbidden by the rules is viewed as allowed.

I am not sure about the wisdom of having a clear part on the beam blocker above, though. It should be opaque.

Not really. A car that naturally has that much overhang at the front will have the same advantage anyway. All they do is make cars with less overhang compete on a level footing. I seem to recall Gordon Appleton ran with one for a while.

Ok, I'm probably going to look stupid for suggesting this, but if it's the front of the car breaking the beam at the startline and again at the finish line (rather than the wheels) then it's of no advantage at all- it's still got to do !/4 of a mile!

or have I missed something? paperbag

Starting line beams is lower so the front wheels is used there and finish line is higher so the front breaks it. That is also why a minimum front height of 3 inches is mandatory on all cars to clear the starting line beams.

Plus on the finishline the car is "on" the reartires and lotts of airpressure is on the front.
I have witnessed earlier this year that the front of Marc Meihuizens 37 Coupe scraped the tarmac at top speed.

its a sad day when to win you need a plastic fin sticking out the front of your car, legal? maybe, but is it in the spirit of the sport?

there, ive said my bit.

Remember many moons ago a few teams ran a rubber skirt for the full length of the car, maybe along the centre line of the chassis or was it on the body of FC's?

Paging Mr Broome, paging Mr Broome.....

I too have noticed the 'chainsaw' on the front of pro modifieds, and wondered how it fitted into the spirit of the rules. Then I remembered this...
,

this

and this

and then such modern interpretations of the rules seemed so much more acceptable!

I can only speak for promodcars and for me this small device is not a problem. It´s better that it´s more equal for everyone even with the use of a old body.
It´s still heads up racing.

Trouble is, if the rules didn't allow such ways to maximise the overhang rule, then the entire field would consist of whatever car had the longest front overhang, and the diversity (Pro Mods greatest asset, IMHO) would be lost.
