US Nationals 1999 was the most memorable drag race I've ever been to, National Dragster dubbed it The Up Set Natonals, Kenny Bernstein, Joe Amato and John force trailered in Round 1. Andrew Cowin marched through the Top Fuel field running a string of 4.66s with K&N Filter's money (what there was of it) only to get stopped by Cory Mac in the MBNA entry in an absolute squeaker of a final. The whole of IRP was rooting for Australia that day, talk about David vs Goliath. The thing that sticks in my memory though is the program said Pro Qualifying would start at 7 o'clock on the Friday night (it goes dark in Indiana about a quarter to !) Sure enough, 7 o'clock rolled around and the first 2 AA/FCs fired up. Tommy Johnson Jnr was in Joe Gibbs' Interstate Batteries Pontiac (after Cruz Pedregon "left" the team) and Ron Capps in the Snake's Copenhagen Camaro. TJ ran 4.88 at 304 right off the trailer for #1 qualifier and parked it 'til raceday on Monday, the damndest thing I ever saw and to be true, 4.88 @ 304 don't look that different than a high 5 at 290 some odd mph. Another memory I have is sitting in the virtually empty Westside stands to watch 70 or more Top Alcohol cars (TAD,AFD & TAFC) along with a mind numbing field of sportsman entries, all qualifying on a Thursday afternoon and all for 10 dollars admission !

The 73 meet at Santa Pod with Don Schumacher and Paula Murthy, the first time we had seen US Funny cars.
