I don't actually know the car, I just heard about the pass from a mate who was there.
I'd be shocked if they hadn't fitted a cage; I think you can see one from the vid, but it's pretty grainy. SP wouldn't usually allow you to run quicker than 11s without one.
Can't imagine that it is build to drag race rules, as there aren't really any classes for Japanese cars (although it would be nice to change that!).

I sponsor, race in and write up the UK Street Racer Series, and I'd dearly love to involve more Japanese and European cars in the series, and create a truly national Street Legal Drag Racing championship.
The trouble is these days that each "sect" keeps themselves to themselves...I just don't geddit. I suppose some prefer to be a big fish in a small pond; maybe that's a tad unfair, perhaps they just like to see their achievements being appreciated.
Something has to be done, we'll end up playing with ourselves instead of each other (ooer)

Think the trouble is that most of these cars serve as demonstrators for tuners/importers (GTC, Sumo, Abbey, Fensport, Norris etc). Their main customer base is the Japanese car scene, so there is no real benefit for them to race at national events. There really needs to be some sort of crossover event, perhaps a kind of East vs West shootout?
Watching the evolution of these cars over the years has been interesting, as the tuners seem to be locked in a kind of arms race. Now they've run 8s, you can bet people will be looking to the 7s (think there's an Australian Skyline running 7s on methanol), so the machinery is only going to get more hardcore. Quite who they'll race against if/when it gets to that stage will be interesting...that might be when we start seeing a bit of a crossover.
Either way, I'd love to see them up against more "traditional" V8s...would add a new dimension to things.
Perhaps the reason why we never see the cars raced by owners is because it takes a company and it's financial backing to make a car go that quick reliably. Once they're done with their promotional work and in the hands of a private owner we never see them again.
I hope I'm talking out of my bottom, as I love these cars just as much as anything else and wish they'd come and race with us, not in a one off "us v them" scenario. Even if there had to be a Japanese class in Street Legal drag racing, if they're all racing together on the same day then they could still qualify for overall championship points as well as class points, and the public would be able to see a wider variety of cars rather than just the small selection on offer at one make gatherings.

Yes there is and consistently too!
There is a Mitsubishi Evo being built (maybe even finished now) thats running on Methanol and is running a smaller intercooler than most cars due to the cold burning nature of the fuel which saves weight.
As JenkinsComp said, the money it takes to make one of these cars quick is amazing but full respect to them. There next challenge in my eyes is to run an 8 on treads and have a match race with the Street Eliminator boys.
On a seperate note though, if you look at some of the lower classes with the Civic Type R's and the like running 11's/12's in there FWD cars they could enter Sportsman ET or Pro ET i think. Look at Paul Webster and his Mini, that car is one of the quickest in Sportsman ET and with probably the smallest engine! Respect!

I know, but 1 second at a time! Imagine how much its gonna cost them to do it!
am I right in thinking theyre technically not street legal when racing? theyre on race fuel and often seen cars with a headlight removed for cold air feed i presume?

Doorslammer Internationals? should fill that slot nicely
I dont want to see these guys embarressed, I think they should be encouraged into classes where they would stand an equal chance. I would love to see them go a few rounds in pro-et, and it would encourage the massive following these cars get through the gate for an FIA event. Then, once we have them in, we really get their attention...
It will cost alot to run these cars in the 7 second bracket. I like the idea of them using new fuels (Methanol etc.)I presume the Skyline that ran 8 seconds would of only run 9.5 seconds on treads. Could you imagine how fast a street eliminator car would go on slicks? Low 7s possibly high 6s. Most of these cars are running conservative set ups at the moment arent they?
