Until they realised how much money they could make for very little outlay! ll.l,
I’ve often wondered about this and while I’m sure they don’t struggle to turn a profit at any event, I don’t think it’s as cheap to run as people expect.I think a lot of their staff are salaried, like some of the track crew who are there at the mid week events as well as the weekend ones.
Then you’ve got commentators, a timing crew, ambulance/medical service, a whole office of marketing/or/accounts etc.
The gate staff, security, shop/cafe staff car park marshals, track crew, cleaners, refuse collectors every weekend need paying too. Even if some of them are volunteers it’s still a big percentage who aren’t.
That’s before you’ve considered maintaining the track, cutting the grass, repairing stuff, running the jet car, paying Terry Grant to drive on two wheels all day and whatever else I can’t think of.
It’s not just a case of ‘have land, drive on it’, despite how it may appear on the face of it.

I would not trust Bartlettt with a penny sorry, not to say he has not done a fabulous job bringing this place into the 20th century, and he does a great job running events and the venue always has, but he has a very easy crowd, there are no other venues like this in the country so not only can he tailor it well he has a very captive audience.
As I say not a criticism, merely a point! The money spent there in last 10 years is a result of big crowds and higher ticket prices that people are happy to suck up and you cannot argue with the crowds, at big events that bank is full, thousands there.
But there is always a price to pay at the lower level, and there are only very basic venues that can be used as alternatives, but as I say you cannot fault his commitment to the venue, bettering it and what has been done there, especially in the past 15 years or so. it is vastly different.
Would I buy a used car off him, no, but I could say that about many, I just think there are many skeletons in closets around that place!!
