I was wondering that. Guess would be as a guide to get cars lined up for burnouts and thus get the startline optimally rubbered in? Sort of like the marks in a bowling alley?
Just watched the Battle of Britain Memorial flight go over on the webcam - seeing the shadows coming down the strip was pretty special.

What was all that painting white patches near the start line during Super pro?
It's not white it's orange dust. I've always assumed its some sort of traction improver. Come on - Somebody on here must know what it is - enlighten us. Never seen it as heavily used as yesterday - had a great spot in the stand right opposite start line - an interesting day watching everybody getting a baseline on the new track. A few clever folk got it right first time albeit most with less than maximum power given the e.t's. There was a point when I was thinking uh oh the track ain't good enough as everyone was up in smoke or shaking badly. Then a few big hp cars and bikes started to get proper powered runs in, which I assume must have been a massive relief to Keith Bartlett. Also while we're on the subject - what's the pink fluid that's squirted around on small spillages etc?
Finally - you've got to hand it to Ian Marshall - he's bloody good.

25 Years ago the Fuel Funnies were running mid-fives..same as today.. something not quite happening here.. much as I'd like to see this Euro Funny Car series working..
I guess part of that could be one driver has only just licensed and is creeping up on it, Spuff and Gordies cars are still relatively new with a handful of runs on each. Its not like the USA with huge budgets and LOTS of testing. as the year heads on and data is collected hopefully times will drop and speeds increasetranscontinental said:

No they weren't. A few racers were just beginning to tip over into the five nineties but the times are considered controversial. Al Bates' 5.99 in 86 unfortunately wasn't. Lee Anders ran 5.99 in 88, and John Spuff ran his first five the following year. According to British Drag Racing Hall of Fame, Rune Fjeld set a European record of 5.57 in 1990, that's what I was remembering.. OK not quite 25 years ago. My point is that the present Nitro Funny Car performances seem just a little disappointing : talk on these pages of fours at over 300 seem a shade optimistic. I'm sure they're doing the best they can though and will step up as the series goes on. Let's see what happens today and I can be proved wrong hopefully!
I do remember the odd AFC running a five but this seemed to be about once a meeting, maybe once a season. Even the Cannonball events rarely featured a full nitro pass (maybe that was half the attraction) and so the alky funnies often won the race. Yesterday's mid 5's by all the combatants is as good a show I've seen in Europe.
Interesting though, they are about 1.5 seconds quicker than plenty of bracket cars, now there's a change from 20 years ago!

Regarding AAFC times, lets not forget the series is in its infancy, seat time and money are not in great abundance, hopefully it can grow, as for actual times i have no doubt all would like to run 4.5 over the 1/4 but after a few years stagnating with 1 or 2 car fields it should/could come good
