120 mile ride planned for tomorrow, I've been out, bought a second bottle and cage, and a load of energy food and electrolyte drink!
Looking forward to it, but am nervous of the distance having done nothing like it before!
My riding buddy as I mentioned on another thread wants it done in around 6 hours which will be tough.
But I'll report back with stats etc and whether I got the train home or not
Anyone done this kind of distance recently?

Good Luck with this.
My longest ever ride (not saying much) was today and 44 miles. Pre planned circuit but had to walk up the last 1/3rd of a b1tch of a hill.... Just cant do hills - at all.
Hopefully your ride will be fairly flat and not too many 1 in 4s?
Everyone keeps telling me; fluid, fluids and more fluids!!! Preferably with electrolytes etc.
Report back and let us know how you get/got on.

Pretty annoyed, guy I ride with is notorious as a bit of a fibber told me he had done 100 miles solo last week, so I thought he was good for it, 60 miles in he says he can't even hold my wheel, and as we are out reading way I have no idea how to get back. On the train now
60 miles @ 18.7 average.
I probably won't go out with him again, always excuses, and always seems to be the rides I'm doing with him that are the freak ones he can't handle!

At 50 miles it was in the 19's and I'm sure I could have kept going till at least 100.
Got the train into Ealing and did another lap of Richmond park on the way home to make it 75 miles
Not too bad really and it's the furthest I've been up to now.
Looking forward to a carbon frame in a couple of weeks to take the buzz out of the poo roads in the SE.

Had an afternoon to myself on Wed 06th April, and decided to fill it with cycling. Left home with a map, 1 bottle and a little cash, and just rode (solo). Aim was to make Ely, from Wimbish, near Saffron Walden, but didn't quite make it. Ended up describing a long loop around Cambridge and Newmarket, out through Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and back into Essex. Despite a lot of the miles being over the Fens, my average over 95.8 miles was 15.1mph (maxing out at 37.5mph). This is somewhat put to shame by your 18.7 average for 60 miles. My pedals were turning for 6hr 21min, but actual time taken was 7hr 20min including map-reading, shop stops and eating. Left at 1420hrs, back in at 2140hrs. All done on 1/2 rack of ribs and chips for lunch, a Tuna/Sweetcorn sandwich at Soham, 750ml squash, a 500ml top-up of Ribena and a 750ml still Lucozade Sport (also at Soham).
Average Speed was OK going out, around 15.6mph before I crossed the A14, then the flat terrain assisted, rising to nearly 18mph by Soham, but from Moulton onwards (about 65 mile point) fatigue set in (is this the fabled 'bonking'?). Average then fell steadily all the way home. Longest ever ride by far, regular route is about 21 miles, averaging around the 15.7 mph mark.
Many lessons to learn from the experience, chief among them the fact that rural village shops are few and far between, and their opening hours are very traditional. Conclusion = buy food and drink when the opportunity presents, don't wait until you need it. I will also have to carry something in the way of emergency energy bars/gels for the first time. I'll definitely be buying a second bottle and cage before I attempt that again. That was a 130+ mile week, and this week I've managed 180+ miles, with a 46 miler on Friday, repeated on Saturday morning.
This has been a huge increase on my previous cycling habits, as I used to think 40 to 60 miles was a lot, but thinking back 3 years to when I got bitten by the bug again, I thought 26 miles in a single ride was an epic.
I'm really looking forward to some more big rides, and will throw in an organised event or two, but in future I will ensure that I prepare properly, and I hope to improve my pace too. Off the road bike now for Easter. Time to sort the MTB out and get out into the woods and heathland with the kids during their holidays, and hoping that the decent weather holds up.

Doubt it, if you had bonked with 30 miles to go you would have been a quivering mess by the time you got home, i'd say it was just regular tiredness setting in. The bonk is horrific, I've had it several times and its an emotional roller coaster. I've sworn that I'd never ride a bike again when i've had it.
Its a seriously depressing phenomonon, you fell like you just cant go on.
Thrust me you'll know when you've got the bonk.
Re: knee pain.
It's most probably due to position on the bike. I can really recommend going to a specialist and having a proper bike fit. Made all the difference for me once I started upping my rides for more than 1.5hrs.
Currently recovering from an ACL repair and itching to get back on the bike...still a month or so away

I've heard good things about the place in Fulham but if you're coming into London there's only one place that I would recommend. Cyclefit on Macklin st, Covent Garden. They really know their stuff. They'll also sort out your cleat positioning.
Best money I ever spent on my bikes. Just built up a Cervelo S2 over Xmas and was straight down there to get a mini fit.

Audax anyone? I did a 200km audax last month. I was 4th back (I know it's not a race), with 201.7km at a moving average of 28.7kph. Time on the bike was 7h02m, time off the bike (stopped at 3 cafes, plus one in our group snapped his chain) was 1h20m. I know it's slow compared to club rides, but I thought I'd point it out to you faster types in case you thought that audax was all beards and Dawes Galaxy. I was the only one on a steel bike in the first 5 home.
You guys have just missed entry for the Cambridge 300km, which closed on Friday. http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/11-314/ but there's a load on at the mo' as people are qualifying for Paris-Brest-Paris.

why don't you google 'cycleft macklin street'
Why don't you say if you know

Did 123 miles from Bath to Cornwall last year solo averaging about 17mph I think. Now in London but not ridden since the summer, give me a month or 2 to get my fitness up and I'd be happy to join for some long rides if you fancy it?

Price?
I originally had the bike fit done at Mosquito bikes in Islington, as Cyclefit was fully booked before my London to Paris ride. Cost was about £180 ish for two hours. I still ended up at Cyclefit before my ride and have gone back when built new bike. www.cyclefit.co.uk
