Some may find this disturbing. It shows a car plowing through a critical mass, in South America. Carnage results.

jesus wept, thats absolutely incredible. like everyone else i am shocked, but not surprised. if the critical mass rides in bristol are anyhting to go by somethign similar will happen here soon. riding slowly (and often dangerously) on a friday evening through a busy city centre annoying motorists who want to get home is a recipe for disaster.

What is a critical mass? What is the point of one?

its basically a mass ride through a city centre on a certain day (usually the last friday of the month). the original idea was to highlight the fact that cyclists are traffic as much as motorised vehicles by riding as a group and having a bit of fun. sadly there is a bit of a pseudo-anarchist, leftwing agenda behind some of them nowadays and they are used as an agenda for various political issues doing nothing but give other cyclists a bad name. they ride as a group and ignore traffic rules by using people to block off roads and things. it pisses motorists off and the critical mass often stop for a few minutes at points where cyclists are known to have been killed.

in principle its a good idea, its occasionally ruined by idiots.

Blocking a town centre road on a Friday afternoon does seem to be a bit provocative. Im a cyclist myself and know full well that many cyclists are just as bad as many car drivers, going out of your way to ps off car drivers, especially a whole city of them trying to get home to their families after a hard week, seems to be massively stupid.

All it takes is one guy who has had a terrible week to snap and this was bound to happen. Not to let the idiot who made the vile attack off the hook in any way, but the organisers need to take a good look at themselves and their motives too.

Apparently no-one died - which is a small consolation. But I hope they find the guy / gal responsible and string them up!

According to BBC News website the police have the car driver in custody. He stated that the cyclists were banging on his car so he sped up as he was scared !!

I agree with deevlash. These events are intended to provoke, if not outright annoy. But, if you keep doing that you will eventually provoke someone who was close to breaking point already.

I'm glad the police have the driver. But the organisers really need to re-think what they are doing and why.

Agreed, every time I see one of these mass cycle events of any description that closes off roads I cringe, it makes things noticeably worse for a while!
