It's something I aim to do and have done for years. May become a possibility this year. Don't get much chance to ride so will be very much a case of building up the miles in a few long rides for a few months before and then just going for it. Maybe a contentious approach but heard that done before. Think it will be great.

Has anyone got the sustrans guide? Think I'd like some scenic rides but would be happy to a few a roads, don't want to break any records but don't want unnecessary milage either! Would prob stay in a variety of accom from b&b's to tents and yha's.

Would be great to read of any who have already done it

I done it last May with 3 mates - we did it carrying all of our camping equipment etc, bikes weighed a tonne!

Covered it in 12 days & we did training rides starting in Jan up til we started - we started off with rides of around 30 miles in Jan and gradually increased the miles on every ride throwing in a few big hills & didnt do any rides longer than 70 miles I dont think in training.

The longest days riding we did was 109 miles, starting off around 7am until around 7pm. After the 1st 3/4 days you settle in and get over Devon/Cornwall, when I started off there I wondered WTF I'd let myself in for! None of us started off particularly fit or even into cycling but this year were riding to Amsterdam in June which is only around 300 miles - its a good crack and something you'll remember for the rest of your life, go for it smile

The bike I used for LEJOG at Loch Lomond - fully loaded up with camping gear etc!

I have just done 3 days with a friend who has decided to do LEJOG. Covered approx 150 miles in those 3 days and was fairly easy going. Started each day between 9:30 ans 10:30 and had to have found a B+B/Pub by 4:30.

I had not ridden any distance for a year (but have been running for the past 5 months about 10 miles a week) and my friend who decided has done no sort of training for a year. He is overweight but in reasonable health. In fact it was a decision on a whim with just 8 days between coming up with the idea and starting the ride. He is holding up well and the beers at the end of the ride are most welcomesmile

Did it 5 years ago, left early May and we had tail winds chasing us up through England and well into Scotland. The wind and weather turned on the A9, it is quite easily the worst afternoon I've ever had on a bike.

But , really glad I did it. With the correct training it will be a great trip if you take your time and enjoy the scenery. We didn't take our time or enjoy the scenery, we were leaving our Travel lodges between 04:30 to 06:30 ish.
Our route was LE to Bristol , Bristol to Wigan, Wigan to Biggar, Biggar to Inverness and Inverness to JOG - that was a half day in the saddle a doddle in comparison to the other days.

Make sure you do back to back days of your longest anticipated day's mileage in training.
I did a couple of 600 mile weeks in the run up to doing it, the training was easily the hardest part, not hard but just soooooo time consuming.
4hr rides before work in the morning, a couple after work, 6 hrs on a Sat, 12 - 14 on a Sunday, looking back I don't know how I talked myself into doing it.
I'd like to do it again but take 10 - 12 days.

For details of our route and kit etc, plus a diary of our travels, have a look at my site.
