As above really.
A good mate of mine is looking at jobs in London, mostly City/C.Wharf area and is thinking of cycling from SW (Twickenham) each day...
Is that mental?
I've done North Kent to the offices a few times, Twickenham to the centre should be pretty easy if he's used to cycling.A good mate of mine is looking at jobs in London, mostly City/C.Wharf area and is thinking of cycling from SW (Twickenham) each day...

A mate of mine commutes from New Malden to Canary Wharf most days which is a similar distance. He's in reasonable shape but not super-fit by any stretch of the imagination. He finds it much easier if he doesn't have to haul his laptop along on the bike.A good mate of mine is looking at jobs in London, mostly City/C.Wharf area and is thinking of cycling from SW (Twickenham) each day...

That's 2 hours on the train.
I used to do the reverse when I lived in London.
How long would it take on a bike ?
He apparently would be using Surbiton station, which makes it 40 mins on the train.I used to do the reverse when I lived in London.

Well in theory it should take about 45 mins on a bike, but I doubt it is possible.

but I doubt a road bike would be order of the day in central London.
Why not? I would have said a road bike is the perfect weapon on choice. There is no way I'd do my commute on anything elseI do a regular 8 mile each way into Central London on my Specialized Langster single speed and I go hell for leather so it's like a workout. Only really started this year and already the commute does not feel long enough
Did a 5.5 mile commute through grid-locked traffic in 20 mins yesterday morning which I am proud of as an average of 16.5 mph when cars are blocking every gap and I even had to pick up the bike and run at one point, as it was so bad, is pretty good going for me.
Was 5 miles from home yesterday evening when I had a blow out so a nice walk home as it was my first puncture since being a kid (now almost 50) and so far I have been commuting and doing trips of between 20 and 50 miles with no puncture kit or inner tubes.
That'll learn me.

I do St Margarets to the centre on quiet roads (Upper Richmond Road - Kings Road rather than the more direct A316-A4).
It's about 10.5 miles each way.
Usually 35mins pedalling, 40mins on the bike (plenty of lights).
Feels a perfect distance but some days it would be great to have more distance forced on me.
