After finishing my Cannondale Killer V my attention turned to my old Kona Roast. I bought the frame at the bike show in 1999 and whilst I was there I got it signed by Scott Beaumont. Then I built it using some of the best parts availible. I had some very good times on the bike but then I got a girlfriend and my bike lived in the back garden for 7 years as a spider habitat. Now its time to bring it back to life.

Next up are some stainless steel bolts replacing the rusty ones, new rear qr, Saint shifter and mech replacing XT, HG93 chain and ceramic pads.

Really nice. I still got my Kona roast. I always wanted the silver one but when i ordered they only had the brown one in the size 13" i wanted so i settled for it. 10 years on mine is still going strong. Just got to re-bleed my rear C2 this week as it's gone spongy, got a puncture as well the other day and the forks are well due a service (2001 Z4 Air) so they will be getting an oil change.

I also had a brown one in 16” and then it got stolen. I was a bit more careful with this one. These were really good clean looking frames and back when Kona were making some interesting stuff. Then they came out with that clump rubbish and they started popping up in Halfords. I was never impressed with the C2’s, the rear has always leaked and they were never powerful enough for me, I should have got the O2’s. Love the Marzocchi forks though, slightly heavy but work so well and super smooth. For my next build I will certainly get another pair.

Basically it was because all the steel ones were rusty and I thought why not, I had to replace them anyway so I went down the titanium route instead of cheap ones that will rust again. The titanium chainring bolts are still sat in my garage though as they are a touch too long for a triple chainset so need to grind them down, then I’ll probably put them on my Cannondale. Since those photos were taken I have fitted the Saint shifter and mech and really happy with it, also replaced the stem bolts with A4 stainless. Also sorted out the Woodman Headset by replacing the bearings that a certain large bike chain said were no longer made, I’ll probably use that on one of my other projects.
