Hi - back in May I rode from Lands End to John O'Groats ride (972 miles in 12 days) and since then have been riding to work 2-3 times a week (17 miles each way) but in the last week or so my legs have started aching and are taking days to recover which they never used to - Im fitter than I've ever been & eat well etc but should I be taking any supplemements to help my leg muscles (mainly thighs) recover? My legs still ached this morning after last week, ironically they hardly ached at all after my LEJOG trip.
They dont ache a lot, Im not in agony or anything - just wondered why the change all of a sudden.
Any advice is appreciated
Thanks

I have recently had the same aching feeling, mine stems from cycling, running and Martial Arts.
due to an injury, ive had to take a forced two-week break (not fun, not related either) and my legs are now back to normal.
Take in plenty of protein, take a weeks rest, warm up and down between before/after exercise.
Ive also found alternating the shower between HOT and freezing cold helps- ive had it explained to me that it does something to the blood vessels.

Carb levels? They dont ache a lot, Im not in agony or anything - just wondered why the change all of a sudden.

On a slow workout, your body will burn the/your fat first, then your carb based energy, then in your liver there is a reserve of carb energy, your body at a last resort will then use this up (3 stages of energy sources from your body).
The replacement of stored carb energy is a complex one, but basically if you dip into, or use up your carb based energy in your liver, and do not replace this within 1 hours after exercise, then the door closes to your liver, and will then take 3 days to drip feed until the liver is replenished.
During this time you will feel like you have no energy, and ache etc. You will need to stop, replenish your carb levels to resolve this.
I train Muay Thai and MMA, and cycle, so I am very aware of this. I do use PSP22 with a Nuun chucked is to make sure my carb levels are up and my hydration levels. On a hard day exersise (cycle to work and back, and 2 hours Martial Arts) I will also use SIS Nocture to replace the Protein level too.
This seems to work for me, but energy and hydration levels are crutial.

You may need to take it easy for a few weeks, you should have taken a rest after LEJOG to allow your body to recover. Remeber rest is as important as training!
