Road Tyres

I've just acquired an old road bike to try and start commuting to work on. Unfortunately I know little about road bikes, having ridden mountain bikes for my whole life! The bike I've been lent/given is generally in good condition, and was a nice bike when new, but has been sat so long that the tyres have essentially dissolved, so I need a new pair of tyres and tubes.

The current tyres are 27x1/4", so my choices are a bit limited, but I could do with advice on what to go for.
Current thoughts run to these:
conti ultra gator skin
or these in either 1 1/4" or 1 1/8" width
conti ultra

What do people recommend? I'm looking at a 9 mile each way which is a mile or so across town and 8 miles on country roads.

I use the Continental Ultra, but 700c. I bought the yellow ones, they're much more noticeable which I think is valuable for a commute. Not that I commute, however, I just liked the colour

Be warned though, they were a bd to get on my rims.

Unfortunately they don't do those in a 27" version. Probably going to order the ultra's in a 1 1/8 width.

Make sure you've got some spare tubes.

Terrible tyres in everyway.

If the frame (and brakes and forks...etc) will permit, it might be worth picking up a pair of cheap 700C wheels, as this will open up a much wider choice of tyres.

The tubes will fit though (I use Schwalbe tubes on my road bike commuter) and your local bike shop should be able to give you decent advice on what's available in your size. From the 700C perspective, I really like Bontragers for commuting, they only occasionally spin up in the wet unlike the Vittoria Rubino's that I had!
