Brake Judder

I have just purchased a Cube Acid Hardtail which I am very pleased with.

First ride out was great, no problems and all seemed fine.

Second day out, the front brake is juddering under hard braking. Any thoughts as to why this might be happening?

They still perform ok just annoying getting these vibrations under hard braking.

Could have missed torquing up the disc or caliper mounts in the shop or there's something wrong with the pads and or disc, although that should be fairly obvious.

How strong is the judder, it's not just the pulse through the vents in the disc is it?

The disc looks fine, I havent checked the pad yet though. It just seemed odd that it was fine first ride and is now juddering. I can really feel it through the handle bars and you can see the fork/wheel vibrating as well.

I will get it check out by LBS this weekend but just wondered if there was something more obvious which I could rectify.

Or it could be a warped disc. Spin the wheel and listen for it rubbing on the pads. The noise should be faint and constant.

That sounds more like a fork/headset problem to me.

Check the QuickRelease or bolt on your front wheel axle.

I checked the quick release and did reset that in case it might have been loose.

As for spinning the wheel it didnt sound constant actually.I could hear the pad rubbing the disc but it wasnt constant during one revolution of the wheel.

Check the bracket it tight, and any other screws. I rode my a few times and it loosened. I couldn't move it by hand, but the screws were not tight.

It should be on a bike that is one ride old. It might just be a case of loosening and re-torquing the bolts that hold the disc but warped discs are normally scrap. They aren't expensive though.

I would take the bike back and ask your retailer to check them out. You should not be able to warp them on a first ride but it may not be that and they should be perfect. You don't want them grabbing on a bike stop at the bottom of a loose surface descent.

Can you straighten them?

Yes. Park make a tool to do it or you can use an adjustable spanner.

It's very easy.
