What bolt: Shimano PD-M505 SPD pedals?

Binding tension adjustment bolt fell out of my pedal on a ride the other day 
Does anbody know what length the replacement should be? It's a button head M3 with a 3mm hex socket drive. I would take another out to check the thread length but the instructions say "if the adjustment bolt is completely withdrawn from the spring plate, disassembly and reassembly will be required" and I only want to rebuild one pedal! On that small matter, what's the procedure for "disassembly and reassembly" for one of these pedals and why does a "professional dealer" need to assist? Any tips so I can do it myself?
