What freeride / all mountain bike?

With my OH being seriously into his MTBking since he was a kid, last year I decided to make the jump into the world of offroad biking and bought a hardtail GT Tempest to practice on, get my fitness up and get used to riding again before upgrading to a full sus.
Its been a year now, and in a few months my boyfriend will be looking at the ride-to-work scheme to replace his 2007 Norco Six Three. I'm also looking to go for a full suspension freeride based bike, as I've learnt quite a bit on the hardtail now.
I'd have two options- get handed down my boyfriends second hand Norco, and spend a few hundred on getting some fresh parts for it and giving it an all round massive service..... or just going for a new one, perhaps a little later on next year- only thing there would be having a budget of around £1200 and there are lots of awful full sus bikes around for that price. Would also definately consider a different second hand bike for under the same kinda budget.
Spec wise, I'd like something that isn't too heavy as uphill would be a necessity (current bike weighs around 34lbs, I think the Norco is around 38 to 40lbs, not too bad but I can tell the difference when riding that over mine up a hill) but could still take a beating downhill without snapping or buckling. Weight is the main factor really. I'd LOVE a Kona Stinky but they are rather heavy as focused more on freeride/downhill.

ETA: use on mostly trails, gisburn, glencoe etc but still be able to handle the rougher stuff as I progress further

A Stinky Air might be a good shout, lighter than the really heavy normal one, less travel too I think so less bob on the way up.
YOu might be better off with more of an AM bike than the full freeride, something like a Spesh Enduro, loads on eBay of differnt years and prices, but they're all good.

Apologies for the plug, but I've got a lovely 2009 felt compulsion 2 up for sale which sounds pretty much ideal depending on what frame size you're after. 3 months old and it's barely been used. Sales pitch aside, they really are stunning bikes to ride, great all rounders.

Also around 17 - 17.5" frame would be ideal. If I had the money I'd be interested haha. They do look lovely bikes.
