Random shouting when out on the bike....

So I'm training for a bit of XC action and I'm cycling around 12 miles every other day, just to get back into shape. On Monday I was cycling on a redway, when some cretin in a shed of fiesta wound down his window and shouted something at me from the road , I couldn't make it out but wondered why he felt the need, other than being a moron. Yesterday, not going particularly fast down a hill a group of chavs were walking 5 abreast on the pavement over a bridge (there was no way around them)they decided they'd attempt to try and block me, possibly in a bid to impress the young chav lady with them, I didn't stop, or even slow down, they jumped out of the way at the last minute but gave me a double-hard torrent of abuse once I was passed them.
I haven't been in the saddle for a while, so is this par for the course now?

To be fair in my case I reckon it has a lot to do with geography. Have you moved recently? Anywhere within 50 miles of London seems to have a disproportionate population of angry, bitter or just generally unpleasant people. I never had anything approaching a confrontation when I was still in the Westcountry.

You mention redway so I wonder if you are cycling around MK? If so, I never have this problem. I usually commute twice a week mostly through MK and never get abuse from chavs or dog-walkers. Mind you, I've always got the iPod on so maybe I just don't hear! Could be the time of day your out and about - no chavs around at 8am on my morning commute!
As for the Chav's, god only knows what mental process their brains go through to justify most of the actions.
But playing devil’s advocate, is it possible you did something to annoy the driver that perhaps you weren’t aware of.
For example, only a few days ago I very nearly knocked a guy on his bike of after he decided to straight line a 2 lane round about forcing me to partially mount said roundabout to avoid him. Guy was in a world of his own on a very busy road/roundabout.

He was coming towards me and the road/redway is separated by a barrier, there nature of the redway network ensures bikes/pedestrians are kept away from cars, I'm assuming he was just shouting some abuse purely because I was on a bike, a bike more than likely worth more than his Fiesta as it goes...
