Not that I have monies but if I wangle out of booking a flight back to the UK for xmas....
Currently ride a Trek 6500 hardtail, 100mm travel rockshox forks , low end diore disk brakes etc, ride a mix of stuff - all day back country trails to teechnical rocky singletrack verging on lite DH (and intermediate DH tracks in vic park dh stuff). prefer the non OMG technical singletrack overall. Chch where I live is all rocky & rooty and steep , or flat and dull but fast.
Been riding mtb for 2-3 years and have a few skills but think its time to step up to a fully with some travel, a proper trail bike and one that wont leave me dead at the end of say a 75km ride on Queen Charlote track etc - so something with 140-150ish travel, robust but not overly heavy.
Theres a Giant trance X3 on for $2400, X2 is about $2800, these seem the best buy new?
Or theres a Trek fuel EX8 2009 on trademe (ebay) for $2550 which is a fair step up on the x3? Seems very lightly used. Would be faster and better than the trance I guess?
Dont get orange here, so GT, trek, Giant, Specialised etc, can possibly find a yeti 575(?) for a decent price, would love something like a Turner 5 spot DW but a frame is likely $3-4k on its own...

What you will now get is I have bikeX and it is superb and all you will need and and and ..
I have ridden the yeti 575, the steering was the best I have experienced but the CF rear triangle lacked rigidity and wallowed around ruts. Get the alu rear triangle it is cheaper and better. I had a week on a 5 spot, superb bike best suspension out there but hefty VERY expensive, no hydroforming just very brunelian engineering and soooo boring to ride.

I recently got a 2010 Giant Reign 2 and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I use it mainly in the Scottish trail centres and freeride parks. Wanted something capable of a bit of light DH work and it does that no probs at all. Maestro system works a treat and it climbs easily as well as my old rockhopper!
