MTBs in mud? - not on Schwalbe

So, after barely a day of light rain, the bridleways round here have transformed to their peferred glue-like clayey state where grass has worn through... barely 10 yards on one stretch yesterday and the tyres on my Cube were gathering soil to the extent that the wheels locked (Nobby Nic and Racing Ralph). I used to use narrow Conti Cross-Country tyres (1.5 inch width) for this very reason, as they self cleaned well, rolled excellently, and had much more mud clearance. But, gather they are no longer available

... anyone else have these conditions and what tyres do you use that prove effective?

I actually run a NN set up most of the year round and find them more than adequate unless its really filthy muddy when I use a proper mud tyre
Which is a Trailraker if you want to know for Dec till the end of March

Panaracer trailrakers are great UK off road winter/muddy day tyres.

I feel your pain. I was pee'd off when I found out that Conti XC's were discontinued.
Luckily I found an unused pair on US ebay. Cost the same as full RRP over here but I think they are worth it.
They occasionally pop up on UK ebay, so its worth having a 'saved search'.

My trusty singlespeed rocks Specialized "Storm" treads, year round. Not only are they great at clearing mud, they also stay very soft and grippy, even in the depths of winter.

However, the soft compound doesn;t wear too well - especially in current, hardpacked running - and there's a little drag on paved or hardpack trails, but they are superb in stty, rutted singletrack.

Just has alweays seemed senseless to me, selling MTBs with monstrous great tyres suited only to dust dry conditions in this country. Think Conti have seriously missed a trick in dumping the Cross-Country as it worked well in general riding additional to being head and shoulders above typical posing balloons in the gloop. I know, on the strength of a week's worth of use so far, I'd be well cheesed off if I'd spent the 80quid these Shwalbes are supposed to retail for rather than had them bundled on the bike; they're not even that inspiring in the dry...

I had some Panaracer 'puncture resistant' tyres on the MTB a while ago and I was well pissed off to find a 2" glass split in them. I was just about to take them back and complain when I realised what a sterling job they had actually done of getting me home without a puncture

I use Schwalbe smart sam, and o.k they are a bit tricky but I actually like them, and they seem o.k. Maybe better out there but they do the job in all weather.

I like it how it makes the back end twitchy which reminds me of cars...
