Hi-Viz???????????????????
Discussion
Just spent a couple of days blatting about the West Highlands here in Scotland and was pleasantly surprised to see so many cyclists out and about enjoying the roads, weather and scenery.
It dawned on me, after a while, that yellow Hi-Viz garments actually blend into the vibrant green background that is sprouting up all over the countryside, rather than do their primary job of contrasting with the surroundings!
It seemed that the brighter the sun shone and the more lush the Spring background was the LESS conspicuous the riders were.
Obviously this is a `perfect storm` situation where the grass/trees/bushes are especially bright and light in colour, almost matching the shades of many High-Viz, especially those that are past their first season or two of use.
Anyway, just a thought if you plan on being in the countryside at this time of year, perhaps an orange coloured garment might be better.

My main hi viz stuff is orange, but in the experiments I do at work (some research on visual salience), hot pink appears to work really well. Also, any hi viz worth its salt should have contrast bands to overcome the problems of similarly light backgrounds/surroundings.
Still undecided whether I can get away with hot pink, mind.

Funny you should mention pink. There was a charity motorbike rideout taking place over the weekend and the riders were all wearing bright pink items. They certainly all stood out, although it may also have been the choice of pink attire that made the visual impression.... all sorts of lingerie, bras, etc etc. And you thought just wearing pink was a challenge!!
