Suicidal pedestrians vs me

Riding home Friday evening, slight downhill probably about 15-18mph, built up area, quite a few peds and one decided to walk out infront of me.
Cue shout from me, left hand out to push her out of the way and brake with my right hand, wheel turned 90degrees and I went over the handlebars and hit the road....hard!

Must have hit my head because helmet is cracked.
Hit my shoulder as well and took a trip to Minors Injuries at the Hallamshire in Sheffield who were fantastic. Nothing broken but in a sling all weekend and dressing on deep graze on shoulder.
So be careful out there.

A drunk guy stepped out in front of me once whilst I was riding home from work. He didn't look - I must have been about 4 feet away from him so I couldn't do anything but barrel in to him. I was probably going about the same speed as you, but somehow i managed to stop myself going over the bars.
The guy i hit took a bit of a winding I think. 15 & 1/2 stone "suprisingly" ploughing in to you must hurt!

Thing is I managed to avoid ploughing into the women, just, so saved her from potential injury and she just walked away! Didn't even bother to wait around to see if I was ok.
I shouted something sarcastic at her as she walked away, the adrenelin was pumping a bit!
A car driver stopped to help me along with another cyclist and a local resident who heard the crash from inside his house.
The guy in the car gave me and my bike a lift home which was very kind.

Instead of using your left hand to try and push the numpty out of the way why didn't you use it to brake as well - then maybe you wouldn't have gone over the handlebars?
Rear brake isn't going to make much difference in an emergency stop. Have to say though, think I'd have kept both hands on!Sorry to hear about the crash antyway, I can definitely sympathise. People just don't look, especially if the cars have stopped. Despite the fact that thousands and thousands of people cycle round Edinburgh, pedestrians never seems to expect you!
I have peds stepping out in front of me all the time, favorite place seems to be Haringay High Rd on my commute home. I don't think they can compute that a bicycle can travel quite quickly (not that i'm the fastest), what's really annoying is when they stop to look at you just before they step out, willing you to pull up
However I've got a air-horn now, they arn't half shocked when I give them a blast!

It happened so fast it was just instinctive to 'fend' the woman off.
My first thought was 'I'm going to go straight into her jaw with my left shoulder, what can I do to avoid it?'.
Unfortunately it meant I lost control and went over the bars.
Even braking with 2 hands I couldn't have stopped in time and swerving into the traffic to miss her would have been potentially worse for me.
Anyway, nothing major hurt on me and I'm going to get the frame checked out this week to see if its still straight. I have a spare front wheel which is earmarked for my single speed build and I can pick up a new lid when I feel ok to ride again.

Was doing the Thames Bridges ride yesterday, some silly woman just walked off the pavement infronto of me, iPod on, didn't even look. I'm just glad i'd spotted her in time. A bell/whistle wouln't've worked, but my big mouth did. The look of surprise was worth the non-apology.
And later on, a Thames towing path now walkway, most people accepting that there are a lot of bikes on it, so keeping the dog on a close lead, except for one, who after three people sweved to avoid and one almost hit it, was told that 'it's a dog walking path, so not going on the lead' Hope the dog wasn't hurt, it looked very scared.
OP, nasty looking accident, shame the woman bailed (avoiding responsibility?) good of a motorist to get you home. Hope the gravel rash is cured soon.

No, they are Mavic Aksium that were a replacement for a set I knackered the last time I fell off, wiped out by someone opening a door onto me!Is that a khamsin?
I've heard they can be a little brittle.
My other set are mavic MA40s from about 1985 which are quality wheels. Doubt it they would have folded like that.
