As per the title, I'm thinking of a 2 week break in August in Scotland. Nothing to do with my 40th birthday at all whistle I've always wanted to 'finish the compass points' at John O Groats as well. I'd prefer circular style routes either off or on road. I'm pretty bike fit so 75 miles on road or 30 miles (ish) off road would be tackled fairly easily. Any suggestions from the PH masses are welcome

Do you like climbing hills ? If so, the Bealach na Ba pass to Applecross is very picturesque. (although a tough climb). If you're really fit then you could do the coastal road towards Shieldaig save coming back over the pass - again, on a good day it's spectacular.

Also the place we're going in April, Glenelg on the West coast. The mam ratagan pass takes you from the main road into Glenelg and then there's a ferry which you can take across to Skye and then loop back to the mainland over the Skye Bridge. You need a good day, but again there are some great views.

For off road:

If I had two weeks I'd probably do mostly natural trails and finish up with a few days at Glentress (trail centre near Peables - if you are not familar with it).

Natural trails
Cairngorms: Aviemore + Blair Athol are good bases (good multi day trips to be had and Laggan Wolftrax man made is 'nearish' for a change of scene)
West Coast: F William (+ take a trip out to Isle of Sky v. good circular route out near the black cullins). F William also has some man made trails to try, a couple accessed by cable car
