Did anyone brave riding to work in the snow?
Discussion
I was on a slick on the front wheel today but have since bought a pair of Panaracer Cinder 2.25's so i'm actually looking forward to a lot more grip tomorrow.
I hardly saw any cars this morning and didn't see a single cyclist between 7am-7.30am. My Polish colleagues find it amusing that we are pretty useless on the roads when it snows.
Only once was I concerned that I may not make it to work, when a van driver (idiot van driver I should add) decided that he only needed to give me an inch gap between his van and my handle bars. Never mind that there was an empty overtaking lane on the dual carriageway.
We all got sent home from work at 1430 today so ideally it will chuck it down tonight so I can spend a couple of hours on the bike. Somewhere away from the main roads and that idiot van driver

I rode from Uxbridge to Shepherds Bush and back fixed on 23s quite a lot of fun I must say, went to the shops this morning with a mate, me on my fixed, him on his MTB, as we set of, thunk, face to ground.
His face, fixed wheels seem to be pretty good in these conditions, you basically have traction control.

Yes i was on the bike as usual passing everyone that could not move in the gridlock ! Left the Hybrid in bed and took the mudplugger which was a b
h on the gritted bits but well worth it on the snowy stuff. Are we in for any more ? hope it lasts over weekend so i can play in it for pleasure and ot just commuting.

The roads weren't too bad, but the cycle paths were treacherous. Any slight incline had the rear wheel (slick) losing grip immediately.
Discretion was the better part of valour this morning, as the balance of the bike is seriously affected by having my youngest daughter sitting on the back and I didn't want to risk a spill with her on-board.

Cycling on snow really isn't too bad at all, the problems start when you get into the thaw/re-freeze cycle and you have to gingerly roll over the compacted, glassy, icy remains.
I switched from Kojak slicks onto a light tread for winter, but I'm thinking of getting some metal-studded tyres for that butch, hardcore look.

Typical. I buy a dirty great pair of knobbly tyres and the sun's been shining ever since.
They made light work of snow and ice though, and don't actually slow me down, so they're staying on
Cycle lanes are the last place I want to ride though. Drains are bad enough; large lumps of ice, screws, stones, road kill, parked vehicles, moving vehicles etc are plain dangerous.
