Anyone have any views/experience on this bike? http://www.marin.co.uk/2008/bikedetail.php?ModNo=3...

local cycle shop recommended it (they are pretty good and honest so far); I've been out of biking for a long time but looking to get back, almost all use will be on-road, so not looking for an MTB (my days of trying to kill myself on steep hills are far behind me smile).

Main use will be hour or so long rides, around local/country roads - aiming mainly to build fitness back up again.

Budget is about £400, so it fits well, feels good and is very light - Marin a reasonable make as far as I recall.

It's only got 8 speeds - used to 21 on my MTB's - but not sure that will be an issue - views? seems pretty common for this type of bike?

Dont' seem to be many online reviews, so not sure if thats just because it's relativley new or just uncommon.

Any other alternatives around £400?

If you have no plans to go seriously off-road, quite a few manufacturers now produce light, efficient commuter bikes which are perfect for road/fitness use and are also ok for light trails.

You could try the Specialized Sirrus http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86039... - or even have a look at Wiggle for more examples in your price range http://www.wiggle.co.uk/CategoryProducts.aspx?Cat=...

If you like the Marin and you like the shop you can't go much farther wrong. 8 gears is more than enough for most road applications if you're not intending to climb some big hills, and you will appreciate the simplicity when it comes to maintenance.
