Hi guys and girls of the PH biking forum

Here is one really hacked off Roadru77er

Of late every time I go out on my mountain bike (Specialized Hardrock sport) I get a poxy puncture! It's on the tyres fitted when new, own brand 26x2.20
I know they need replacing soon but don't seem especially thin at the moment

I'm looking for an on/light off road tyre with good puncture resistance. A biking buddy has recommended Schwalbe ATB Super Marathon? these will apparently resist attack from drawing pins! However they seem to be no longer available. On the Scwalbe web site a drawing pin resistant tyre is shown but it seems to be wholly road biased. Can the bikey nuts on PH come up with something better/equivalent

Also my local cycle shop stock inner tubes by Panaracer called Supertubes they're double thickness would these be a good alterative/extra to good tyres? I don't fancy going down the goo route

Thanks folks Roadru77er

Decent tyres (with protection) and decent tubes (thick) will cut puntures.
- Do you know whats causing them? Pitch flats? Thorns?

Ive had one puncture on my rockhopper in the 14 months ive owned her, Rode about 800miles, mainly single track.

No idea what has caused the latest one. There was a thread in General Gassing a couple of weeks ago about "road dressing" ie; chucking loose grit on wet tar and seeing how much sticks as a form of "resurfacing" I replied to that as the punctures started just after this and much of the unstuck grit was ending up in my tyres!I have avoided this road since so I am mystified as to the cause of the latest deflation. Got the mick taken out of me by my friendly local bike shop having bought 2 puncture repair outfits in the last 6 weeks!Just counted 4 patches on my spare tube is there a maximum no of patches you can apply? Really p1553d off it just seems at the moment I ride the bike I get a flat. This nearly all road riding but to avoid the "dressed road" I rode across a field last weekend and was flat free. Went for a short ride on road on Tuesday another flat very disheartened! Beggining to hate my bike

The tyres i was using last summer where Spesh Fast Trac's which have some basic anti-puncuture protection.

Im now on Kenda Nevgials which i got for winter, and it was the first time out on these i got my punchture. Although nothing since. Proberbly a but soft and knobly for your riding however.

Are you checking the tyre carefully when you fix each puncture? If you dont then the same thorn/nail etc will puncture your tyre every time you put your inner tube back in.
I would also suggest fitting slime or slime tubes.

The specialized tyres are a pain for getting punctures. I used to fit them and have a puncture a month.

I ordered some of these from t'internet, and have had only one puncture since then - and that was a snakebite, after whacking a pretty sharp rock at speed.

I have normal inner tubes, but I do keep one of these in the bag:

I've always found that even though a tyre may look as though it has plenty of tread left, after a year or so they do seem to get a bit soft and weak - maybe the rubber ageing or something. New tyres never seem to puncture, could be the tread/knobble depth, I don't know. All I do know is that when you get regular punctures, its time for some new tyres.

Get over to chainreactioncycles and look there - loads and loads of reviews on the best tyres will help you decide.

Have used Maxxis tyres a lot and they seem to be fairly puncture-resistant on very rocky/gravelly terrain - run at 35-40psi.
