wharncliffe wood open?
Discussion
Yeah, I'm quite close, used to ride there every weekend but not been for about a year for no particular reason.
Its not 'closed' per se, never will be. Its regular Forestry Commision Land.
Theres a number of Short DH's and also a new Black XC which is under construction. Some of this may be blocked as its unfinished.
The latest info should be on www.singletraction.org.
In fact, if your wanting to visit this weekend - I also fancy a trip and have no-one to ride with, could meet up and go for an explore?
If your close by, its definitely worth a trip, there may be small sections closed but there should be enough to string together a ride - even if its a case of meandering aimlessly around. Its not a huge area so you cant get too lost1

Snotrag, That would be great however I do not think you would put up with me just yet.
I am quite new to this and doing to lose wight and get fit whilst having fun at the same time. I am pretty sure at the level of fitness I am now you would get quite fed up of me lagging behind and panting like a mad man at the slightest hill
If you think you can put up with that yeah would be great but please please trust me I am at a very low level of fitness just now although I am improving every week.

We went the other week , the downhill sections are great , the rest is quite muddy, if your wanting more of a fitness ride , park further away and ride in using the Trans pennine cycle route - maybe from Penistone for example. Personally the day was marred by hitting a tree headfirst then having 3 days of concussion,
Here's a link to some pictures.

Sorry, but I had to quote these. Most amusing pictures.
Top quality mud pluggage.

Ah yes, that would be the kind of terrain I expect at Wharncliffe...

Did this one go apex over base aswell - looks close!

Pesty - if its more of a cardio workout your after, Wharncliffe is perhaps best left for another month or so while it dries out. As you can tell it gets slightly boggy, and you may spend a lot of time on the floor.
I'm gonna decide later in the week depending on the weather.
When its wet, its better to head into the Peaks where it drains better, have you ridden much on the other side of Sheffield?

I bloody hate that place still after almost 15years.
Crashed there racing the National Student Champs, oooo must have been around 1993 or maybe 94.
Cleared one of the near perpendicular transitions between two fire roads and then promptly went Arse over Tit halfway down the fire road.
Two things went through my mind,
1) Boll*cks this is going to hurt
2) Ooooo look my speedo says 30mph.
Pulled all the ligaments in my shoulder and off the MTB for almost six months. Did you know you have 4 in there!
