I have a top limit of 400 for a road bike which im doing through the cycle to work scheme and its through halfords.

What road bike would you recommend? I cant spend over £400

looked at Giant SCR 4.0 but what else is out there ?

and halfords can order any bike i ask for so im not just stuck to there range

Spec are good but don't think you'll ge an Allez for the money.

Not sure how much the Boardman bikes are but they might be in range.

Otherwise I've seen plenty commuting in on Dawes so assume they're reasonable.

Buy a mountain bike and put slicks on it. Best of both worlds. Go for Kona in halfords. Good luck and enjoy yer biking.

Heavy frame (at that price), smaller wheels, geared for off-road.

Personally I'd go for the best hybrid you can get if you want a flat-bar as it will at least be 700c wheels and therefore faster to ride.

This maybe pointless but Edinburgh Bicycle CoOp's range of Revolution bikes are always worth consideration. They offer the Bike to Work scheme so I don't know if Halfords will be keen to deal with them.

Don't forget you can get helmet, lights, gloves etc... as part of these ride to work tax break schemes.

Halfords would not deal with Edinburgh Cycles for me with my Cycle 2 Work scheme.

The Boardman Hybrid Comp is £399. That would be all the bike you need for a light-ish cheap commuting/road training bike.

My experience of Boardman bikes is positive - great value bikes, with high spec for the money and via Cycle-2-Work utter bargains. My experience of Halfords was so-so, but at least they set up my bike well enough, adn offerred 10% free goodies as part of the scheme.

My mates just bought a Giant SCR 3.0 from Wiggle for £380 and for the money its a great bike. Not too heavy, reasonable spec and looks great. Spend a few quid on a decent set of rims and it will be even better
