I've been trying to find a couple of bikes for twin 11 year olds boys today. They've had second hand bikes for years but they don't last and there's no incentive to look after them because they're normally pretty shoddy to start with.

Looking around local bike shops everything seems to be all show and no go. They neither want nor need front suspension and dicc brakes, I'd rather they had something less fancy with half decent components that will last.

Any ideas where to look? Don't want to spend much north of £100, being twins everything costs double!.

Tough one. Have a look at evanscycles.com, wiggle.com and chainreactioncycles.com as they often have good deals (I found a couple around the £120 mark). Halfords seem to have a couple of Apollo's at under the £100 mark, but these could easily be a false economy.....

They have a god 24 inch wheel bike in Decathlon - a silver mountain bike. V brakes but it has got front suss. Seems reasonable quality.
Just over 100 quid.

Problem solved. Sent them to the local town market, which has a bike auction. Gave the £60 each and said what they didn't spend on a bike they could put in their banks.

One got a Falcon with funky yellow tyres for £12 and the other a Raleigh for £16. both are old but mechanically sound. shimano thumbshifter gears, canti brakes etc. takes me back wink

2 happy kids, a lesson in buying from auctions and a bit more money in their first car/ house deposit funds. Lovely job smile
