Sure this ones been asked a million times!

Whats the difference?

Just ordered some nobby nics from chair reaction and the reciept e-mail says "folding type" and i'm not sure if I want them or the normal round type??

I have a scott genius and am getting these to offer 1.8" and less rollong resistance as I ride 50% on road and 50% fire trails etc (thetford area too)

Thanks for help.

AFAIK, folding tyres are similar to normal tyres, but constructed without the metal wire bead that gives a conventional tyre its shape.

They are significantly lighter than beaded tyres and are classed as a premium product. Don't know if there are any other advantages or disavantages. No incompatibility issues, both types should fit, regardless.

Folding, ie can be folded and carried as a spare easier!!!, ever seen old pic's of the Tour de France with tyres strung across their bodies.

A bit lighter too, less rotating weight equals quicker excelleration biggrin

More expensive the only downside really.

I was told by a certain tyre maunfacturer that it refers to the bead of the tyre.Folding tyres have kevlar or some other light weight flexy material as a bead, most others have metal/wire beads.Hence you can't fold a wire bead or traditional tyre. The reason this was developed was weight saving only as it cost more to manufacture but saves heaps on rotational mass. smile

Been out at Thetford all day on the new "folding" tyres. It became blatantally clear what folding meant as soon as I opened the box smile

The Nobby nic 1.8" tyres I got have made a huge difference to my bike, its much faster to accelerate and much less tyring to ride. (eta. this may be due to me getting fitter over the last 2 weeks!! Not ridded for 6 months before that)

Definatly worth the £60 investment in a pair if you do a bit of road riding as well as off road.
