Having ripped my old rear derailleur apart off the gear hanger a couple of months ago, I ordered and fitted a whole new Deore LX groupset (yes, I am a cheapskate). It all seems to be working okay with the indexing and everything else, but the bottom sprocket on the rear derailleur sounds worse than a BMX with spokey dokeys.

Watching the chain moving through it, its almost as though the gap between the teeth is slightly larger than the chain, so each link is dropping down into the gap rather than smoothly sliding on to it.

Before I give in and take it the LBS, does anyone have any suggetsions?

groupset - does that include the rear cassette?

If so, and you didn't replace the chain at the time, that's probably your answer.

Probably be a good idea to have the dérailleur hanger alignment checked as well if it wasn't done at the time the new dérailleur was installed.

Correct 9 speed chain, and not an 8 speed by accident?

Should be, whole thing came as one package. But again, I'll check when I get the chance.
