Anyone else fitted the new external BB hollowtec type cranks?

I have a set that I am trying to fit, unfortunately the intructions dont make it clear which side the spacers need to be on...its 68mm BB so needs two on one side and one on the other..

I just cant work it out and dont want to mess about testing it out (had enough of a hassle getting my old cranks off).

download the instructions for fitting off of shimano's website to be on the safe side,
i have fitted a fair few x type RF ones, but you need to check.

holla back if you can not source the instructions.

you should not need to, but when it is all back together, check the shifting and chain clearence and tweak it if you need too.

Pesty - You need to have the frame faced before fitting an external BB but if it's been done before you won't need to re-do it (Idoubt it was done in the factory).

OP - the position of the spacers is dependant on what chainline measurement your frame has.

Dear All,

I am about to get an XT Hollowtech 2 crank and fit it to my Stiffee.

Can anyone confirm the tools i need? I have read somewhere that x2 types of hollowtech tools are required for the job. If so, which are they?

Cheers

To answer the question:

For a 68mm BB shell, two spacers on the driveside, and one on the non driveside.
For a 73mm BB shell, one spacer only on the driveside - none on the non driveside.

I'm assuming you're using a band-on type front mech?

As for spanner you need the TL-FC32 spanner (comes with XTR cranks wink ) to fit the bearings. No other tools are required (apart from maybe a soft hammer and a 5mm allen key).

A great article can be found here: http://www.bikemagic.com/news/article/mps/uan/3914 (by the power of google).

Edited to add: Yes, you need to face the BB as well - LBS is perfect for this.

I've got them on mine, but left the facing, shimming and fitting to my local bike shop.

Sorry that that is as much use as a chocolate tea pot to ya smile

So do you need to reface the BB if for example, taking out a Deore to replace with an XT?

As far as i can tell, i have not affected the facing on the BB since fitting and using the Deore

Nope, not if already done (i.e if OEM fitted, I suspect so)...

All fitted thanks guys - LBS is sorting out the front mech for me on saturday, same time as fitting a new XTR rear mech....

I got my frame second hand and it was running an external BB before so no need for the facing. The hardest bit was getting my old cranks off without a crank pull.

Best not asking how I did that - but fitting the XT was piece of cake even without the tool.

Off to Laggan this weekend see how it goes
