I've been sans cycle for over 15 years now but want to get the glory days back. Ive spotted a Kona Stinky frame for sale for a great price, my question is, is it a good frame or should i get a hard tail? My main riding will be dirt track and bush with a bit of down hilling. As for groupset etc, i'll be bugging you lot for some tips on some mad stuff. I still hanker after a Tioga/Sugino Disk Drive a'la John Tomac!!

Sugino! blimey theres something you don't here of these days. I've still got a Sugino crankset on one of my Klein's.

Kona make good bikes, the Stinky ought to be fine for hitting big stuff, jumps and rapid descents, although i'm not sure i'd want to be climbing any mountains with it.

Sounds like you need to get to know the search function.

Kona make pants frames and bikes. I wouldn't bother.

Only joking - Kona's more than capable. If the frame is secondhand you'll need to budget for changing the bearings and servicing the shock.

yeah its second hand, its a Fox Vanilla shock, what sort of service do they need? Seals etc?

I remember Kona's from my riding days and they where sweet bikes, mate of mine had a Cinder Cone (?) and i distinctly remember how tight it felt on XC courses.

I used to run an old Proflex back in the day, with the elastomer rear suspension, plus i had a Raleigh Technium bonded titanium frame, with first issue 757 SPD's on them! Doing my research recently and i can't believe the ace value of parts these days, I remember when i was into bikes and the cost of stuff was a weeks wages! I was obsessed with the damn things. My last bike was a cannondale with a 24" rear wheel and Magura hydraulic brakes, loved that bike until some scrote nicked it out side John Menzies and i tried in vain to hobble after them in my stupid Look road shoes...

Have a look on www.tftuned.co.uk for shock servicing.

The Stinky is a fairly average run of the mill type bike, but fine for someone starting up again.

Thanks for the advice fellas, The Kona will do for now, i'll just get decent bits for it and upgrade the frame later on, pretty much what i used to do.

On an other plane, does MTB magazine still exist? I think I still have the first edition back at my mums in England!
