I used to have a mid range Trek road bike (1500) I think which was reasonably decent, carbon forks, ultegra group set etc, set me back a bit over a grand. This was a couple of years back though and have been wanting to get back into cycling recently.

I'm looking to go a bit more upmarket and would prefer an Italian designed (preferably made) bike, probably carbon framed (but not necessarily) and it must be a complete bike.

I've been looking at bikes like the Colnago CLX but this has a sloping geometry with a maximum frame size of 59cm. My Trek had traditional geometry and I think was over 60cm, probably 63cm (I'm 6ft 4&quotwink. I read that the traditonal equivalent of the sloping geometry is 4cm less! That makes the maximum size of the Colnago 55cm traditional equivalent no?!?

Can someone tell me whether sloping geometry suits a taller rider and recommendations based on the above would be excellent?

Ta! wink

It's not really my area of expertise so can't really comment.

Best bet is go and visit your local bike shop and have a chat with them.

I think larger size 'compact' frames tend to have less of a slope than medium and smaller sizes. It all depends on the manufacturer but the sizes you quote sound right to me. I'm 6'2" and ride a 61cm centre to top non compact road bike.

Cinelli and Wilier

are making some excellent bikes at the moment..

I'd recommend a Planet-X Superlight Pro to anyone who'll listen - who needs Italy when you can have Doncaster?

Cheers for the replies guys.

I eventually found a comparison and it seems the largest compact (59cm) is equivalent to a 63cm traditional, but obviously I'll have to check in store first.

Yeah I've been looking at the Wilier Izoard and various De Rosas which look awesome.

I think I'm going to go down the custom bike route, something like Colnago CLX frame, campagnolo Centaur groupset, campagnolo wheels (haven't decieded whether aero or lightness) and various other additions.

Been a long time out of the saddle and looking forward to getting back to it!
