Can anyone recommend me a reasonably priced yet secure cycle lock?

I live too far away from the station to walk, but too close to get a taxi and buses aren't reliable enough, plus I like cycling!

Obviously I'll be quick-releasing my front wheel and locking it through that and the rear stays, as well as taking the saddle off.

Sometimes I wonder if a dirt cheap shed of a bike for stuff like this would be a better bet. Anyone got one going?

Shed bike is best bet for leaving at stations.
Unfortunately you'll still need a quality lock as some muppet will try to nick it anyway.

pdv6 recommendation is spot on.

You have to make your bike more secure than the one next to it so that your's is harder to steal and they move on.

If you want to keep your bike thought it is not an area that you should scrimp on.

Make sure any lock you purchase is at least 15mm or over in diameter / thickness. A public forum is not the place to go into the reasons why just accept it.

I'd also use two locks independantly of each other.

For the reasons mk1fan has mentioned I actually removed a bit of detail from my post before posting

I've always favoured OnGuard locks. Aswell as having all the right ratings, they actually 'look' as hard as mk1fan*, which I think is a good deterent in itself.

I wouldn't leave anything at the station that I'd be bothered about getting stolen. An old heap (albeit one with reasonable wheels/brakes - minus their stickers of course!) is the way to go. Singlespeed for extra undesirability and ease of maintenance.

CRC sell allen key QRs for about a tenner that make it a little more taxing for someone to steal bits off your bike. I'd also advocate a U-lock along with a reasonably sturdy cable lock. U-lock through the rear wheel and frame, cable lock through frame and also looped through front wheel. Beats faffing about taking the wheel off every time.

I'd recommend the X-Brand (from CRC) allen key skewers over other makes as they have a very simple feature so you need a 'special' allen key to do them up / undo. Again public forum not the place etc...

Cheers for the replies, folks.
Looks like a 'shed of the week' bike is in order, then! http://leeds.gumtree.com here I come!

I'll be getting a proper lock for my decent bike as well so thanks for the recommendations. smile
