I’m waiting on my new bike to arrive and the wait is killing me.
I’ve ordered an Orange 5 pro with some tweaks which will personalise it and up rate the front end (have gone for an Fox RC or something like that its one down from the talas 32’s). When I demo’d the bike 2 weeks ago I loved every minute of it and now cant wait to hit Bath, Bristol and Welsh single track on it (haven’t done that in a while).
But at the same time I’m concerned as hell over my colour option I chose and kit.
I’ve gone for apple green, which could be best described as Lambo Diablo green to anyone not sure what apple green looks like. I suppose why im concerned is that I can’t find one picture on it anywhere on the net, all I can see are the other 2 flatter green options so not sure if by looking at a green tube in the bike shop, what I ordered is what I really want… lol
Also to add to my concern and anticipation the demo bike I originally rode was a golden silver SE (top spec kit bike. Of course I loved it (who wouldn’t love a 3k bike) but going down in spec is something which I don’t like doing as you always have a bitter taste of what could have been once you’ve experienced the best.
I think or im pretty sure I’ll love the orange but these two factors of colour choice and spec are making me wish I could pick it up tomorrow to make sure i've done the right thing and relieve my worries.
So the question is… does everyone go through this when ordering a custom bike?

The orange in my humble opinion is a bit common as its a standard colour so everyone around my way had either silver black or orange. I was tempted with ice white, but tbh mud and more mud topped off by crusted on mud dont mix with clear white bikes.
Also when i say customised i dont mean full custom build i mean custom compared to odering a trek/spex/canondale.

Wow - I am putting my order for an Orange 5 this weekend...
At the moment I cant decide between the SE or the pro with some serious upgrades.
Tbh, I orginally wanted to spend £1600 that was my price so to jump to £2799 which is the standard SE price was something I personally didnt want to do whether or not i could afford to.At the moment I cant decide between the SE or the pro with some serious upgrades.
I've gone for a 5 with custom colour uprated forks (to introduce lock out etc) finishing kit and Hope headset as i was told the quick release Hope are useless and floating hubs unnecassary so the only thing worth considering in the 'Hope' package was the headset.
Things i wish i could of changed are the hubs, it comes with the Hope 2 hubs but i couldnt get a custom colour to go with the paint etc which i was a bit annoyed about. Also going from the SE demo bike to riding the Pro the front end is obviously heavier as you dont get the lighter Hope Brake leavers and floating rotors. But tbh this will do me and when everythings considered i still go on the search for my first lotus. (although i've gone from looking at a S2 S MY07 to a later Exige S....lol)
My bike came in at £2400 (i think) but i levied the deal with free gear i.e. helmet, camelbacks etc...
Post up when you've ordered it!

You're worrying about the colour? Just ride the bloody thing! They all look the same after a couple of rides anyway: mud, mud, more mud, scratches, yet more mud...
I dont follow I thought it was all about how shiney your bike is and not how well you ride it which counts the most when posing on your local route? lol.....CooperS said:

Where I am still scratching my head is I dont want the added maintenance overhead of XTR, quite happy to go with XT for my use of the bike (But more bling is MORE bling)
Do I spend £2659 on the pro with all the upgrades or just go and get the SE for an extra £250 and have the best componentry and XTR?
The paint has to be the Electric Blue as it is Close to the Magnetic Blue of my Elise...
TBH its all about your requirements and what you need from the bike or don’t need even.
My thought on my orange 5 is that its a tool I can use to get me from A- B on all the riding I’ll cover over the year. Its exceptionally good and will only faultier if I head to the alps as I’ll need lager rotors than std (something you might want to consider Hope FR 180mm aren’t going to put up with some really rough stuff)
Therefore its more of functional toy rather than an extravagant one. If I was to of gone extravagant I would of spent 3k and bought a carbon/ti Turner and custom built it. But I would have then been worried if I had dropped it, I would have had to sleep with me in the tent at night and wouldn’t have anything left after doing so.
I think if you feel you need more adjustment than the Fox RC (140mm with lockout) and need to get the Hope Kit with the performance kit (300 quid combined) then I would say plumb for the SE if not and you can show restraint I would get a pro and do some choice upgrades over the summer and enjoy it.
However after saying that I still refer back to my Lotus dilemma over not needing an exige or super charger or a honda’d machine but when it comes to toys who can say no…. other than your partner or bank manager.

Hmmm, being an engineer and a gadget hound, I find it hard to say no to something that improves performance (weather I am capble of exploiting that performance is a different matter and one I like to ignore). I agree that the talas fork probably wouldnt be worth the money from the float RLC and I probably wouldnt get much from the Mini Pro brakes over standard but I do know when I dont need a supercharger My thought on my orange 5 is that its a tool I can use to get me from A- B on all the riding I’ll cover over the year. Get yourself a 111R then put some 2 way adjustable Ohlins on, it will be as fast as a zige, lighter and better handling. You can also take the roof off. Dont go for the elise S, frustrated me, and I was forever being taken on the straight by Focus RS. The R kicks arse.

Anyway back on topic I agree with you that there is a limit where that Hope carbon leaver you paid £100 to upgrade to stops helping you up that hillbut knowing its there is still just as sweet.

Well i dont know they do 4 different greens, as i said i've ordered apple green which is like a met. dark green (very similar to the lambo green) the one on the sight looks like one of the flat greens they do. Is yours this colour? http://www.orangebikes.co.uk/2008bikes/five-am.php

On the shake down front i'm taking it out for all of an hour Sunday which will be twice round QE park stop start (Near Petersfield, Hampshire)which is just next door to me just to make sure that brakes are sorted and everything is tight then its onto two night rides Tuesday/Thursday any advice on bedding in?
Cheers just got back from Guildford where i picked it up and cant wait to ride it.
It looks really really good the colour makes it stand out alot more than the std colours.
Right well i'm off to sort out my lupin wilma's to fit my new helmet and then im out for a quick test and beding in the brakes.
Cheers for all the advice and goodwill, will post pic's tomorrow if i can get my camera to work with my Imac...
