Included with my new Rockshox forks is a leaflet which states:

Allow adequate steerer tube length for stem installation. Overlap handlebar stem at least 2" (55mm) over the steerer tube. Stem insertion less than this ammount could cause fracture to the steerer tube.

I'm assuming this means the steerer should be poking out from the headset's top bearing by at least 2"? It sort of reads like they mean, after you've installed the stem there should be another 2" poking out though which can't be right confused

I'll be getting my LBS to fit it along with a new headset as I don't have the tools and am too chicken to cut the steerer myself wink Just curious as to what they mean really.

I would advise you do not cut your steerer tube to short, i do not as it leaves me the option to swap the forks to another frame at a later date, or if i need to sell them on, to someone.

Also allows you to adjust the height untill you get the set up perfect, it does not look to bad with a couple of inches steerer tube sticking out the top, but no more than a couple of inches though, wink

I always use the tools at freinds shop to fit the headset, as if you do not have the correct tools you can mess the headset up, so idea to go to the LBS.

Here is a pic of the stem on my bike if you zoom in,

Your first assumption is nearest to the correct one.

What they mean is that there should be a minimum of 2" of steerer tube inside the stem when everything is fitted. In other words, the stem should have a minimum of 2" of steerer to clamp on to. Depending on whether you use steerer spacers or not will determine the actual amount of steerer out of the top of the bearing top race when the stem is not fitted.

Hope that makes sense

Industry standards are unwritten but never have more spacers under your stem than the steerer is wide.Cut accordingly.
Have what you want above smile

Ok, I think I understand. The current setup is with 3 spacers under the stem so total steerer tube height poking out from the top bearing race is just over 2". I guess I'll get the same done for the new one, although I might get another 10mm spacer filled above the stem incase I need to change frames later smile
