got a simple wireless cateye for MTB use and it works fine - only prob' i have had is that a poweful set of lights will disrupt the lights which may or may not be an issue for you...

Cateye are good. I also have a trek one too, and that is equally good. Used both types for years and never had a problem.
I am also tempted to try one of the Blackburn ones.

One word of caution though - don't get a wireless one unless you want to spend ££££ on replacing x2 watch type batteries every time it goes wrong.

You can get a good wired one for about £12, it needs 1 battery, never goes wrong (wireless ones can get interference) and lasts forever.

Re the batteries, yes their about £4.99 in most shops, but go to www.7dayshop.com based in the channel islands, about 99p there, plus lots of other goodies at relatively cheap prices, especially on batteries, 35 mm and lots of other goodies, been using them for years now. My battery lasts me probably almost a year anyway. But 99p is better than £4.99.

My wife worked in a photo shop for a while, told me they used to buy the batteries in for 50 p, which you and I had to pay £4.99 for.

Also www.cheaperbatteries.co.uk sell TEN CR2023 button batteries, which my Cateye uses, for £3.50.

I bought this for my road bike I purchased a few weeks ago. Great bit of kit from the experience I've had with it so far.

I'd say that wireless is definitely worth the extra few quid, and if it's going onto a suspension bike then it is pretty much essential to save the hassle of running wires all over the place.

Clocked 42.42 mph today on it smile My own personal best so far on it.

That's a good price. I assume you meant CR2032, though?

That's my take on it, too!

I run a Cateye Micro and that seems happy enough to be mounted right next to a HID lamp with no noticeable issues.

The batteries seem to last a fair while, about 18 months or so in daily commuting use.

Someone has suggested I get one with a heart rate monitor.

Is this needed and if so what would I need?

Few years ago I had a wireless one from marks and spencers, or somwhere equally stupid.
- It worked find, did everything i wanted it to, and only coat about a fiver.

On this ive ended up with a entry-leval (the cheapest) wired cateye, which was about £12, although i got it throw in with the bike.
- Only thing it doesnt do, which is mildly annoying, is a triptime function.
- As for the wire, im very take it or leave it, both work fine, wired was cheaper.

Depends if you want to monitor your heart rate really.

I cycle for enjoyment, leisure and for the "fitness-feeling" that I get from having been out and done some exercise. I don't weigh myself, fuss about BMI, and therefore can't be bothered monitoring heart rate.

Ask yourself why you go cycling?

Depends. For serious training maybe yes.
For pleasure / commuting riding definitely no. Unless you want one, in which case it's your money!

I moniter my heartrate with my figures.
- I only take it when its partiularly high, after a long climb for instance.
- Just to make sure its not excessivly high, as i have been know to over do it.

Ok, so the heart rate thing is probably overboard

So from what I can Cateye seem to get a good vote

I have also found some good on line reviews

The are a bit more expensive, £30 against a Halfords £16 one but its probably money well spent

Thanks guys

Seems obvious, but dont forget the helmet. I was out for a leisurely trip on the mountain bike about 4 weeks ago, as I slowed almost to a stop to make a 90 degree turn, I hit some ice, As I had a slight right lean on the bike to turn, the bike slipped quickly to the left and I went down, (I was wearing clip on's) didnt have time to get my foot down, so I fell straight on to my right side, bearing in mind your head is a good height from the ground when your on the saddle.

Anyway the side of my right head slammed on the tarred road, no problems, when I got home I notifced my helmet has been cracked in 4 places at the point of impact, god knows what would have happened if I hadnt been wearing it.

The shoulder is still tender, and thats 4 weeks ago. Anyway, enjoy your cycling, I have been cycling for about 15 years now, and throughly enjoy it.

Yeah, its got to be a good idea hasnt it.
- I bought a new one about 2months back which is better and more confortable. Becuase i wasnt really wearing my other one, and it maybe wasnt up to much eather.

Managed to pick up a Spesh Instinct for £26 reduced from like £60/70.
- The deal was on the blue ones, which are being discontinued. But when i got it id got a size to small, and they had run out of the size above when i came to swap it, so got a black one, also for the £26. Bargin.
