Rivington is a good place to ride, but its mainly xc/trail riding but if you head to Winter hill there is a wicked descent from the tower on the north, north east side towards blackburn.

rivi is my local haunt, you're right tho the decent from the tower is sweet. theres also a wicked bit of singletrack on the right past the dog kennals. was up there last week. looking for something new and a bit harder ;-)

ah right...

erm, not sure really. Ive heard a few things about something around the blackburn area but what about heading an hour over towards yorkshire?

You might get a better response over on singletrackworld...

Have fun though! I miss rivi after moving down south!

The Howgills? 'The Calf' is within 1 hour of Rivington / Bolton I think?. Just of the M6 before you get to the Lakes, and just after Yorkshire Dales. Motorway all the way.

You have to get your bike up to the top first though! (I think its about 600m or so high from memory - pos more). Plenty of fast downhill options. Loads of XC options if you want to get some miles in.

Might be snow on the tops though? + will be windy and cold.

Is this post serious? Although, it does depend on how far you're willing to travel - and how - but the North West is one big trail as far as I remember. There's only one 'Trail Centre' though, the name of which escapes me. Try MBR's website and look at their back catalogue of trail maps.

Have a good one either way.

Bet it dont take much more than an hour to get to Coed Llandegla from Manchester - its 2 from Sheffield.

Much fun, good place to ride in the winter...

Ever heard of the Peak District? Try Doctor's Gate, Cut Gate Path or Stanage Edge.

Start on the road at the west edge of the route.

I know Scotland's not exactly near Manchester, but have you done the 7 Stanes,SW Scotland? I was up there a year or 2 ago (Dalbeattie and Mabie forest) and it was pretty much what you're asking for in terms of techy and steep. Or, (while I'm making sensible suggestions!) you could come to New Zealand.

Llandegla is my local (when im at home, near chester) and its not at all bad.
- Ive been meaning to get to rivington one day, which would tie in with visting family in bolton if i could organise it. Sounds like people rate it fairly highly then?
- Im currently riding cannockchase a lot as im living in uttoxeter for a while. But it would be nice to do a road trip upto 7 staines or somewhere like as well. Get insured on the 806 for a weekend, driver up with trailer and 2-3 mates and camp out in it.
