Have recently started a daily cycle commute of 18 miles each way and also as it is rather cold at the moment I have bought some DHB bib tights. I wear flat style boxers underneath, and despite trying to pull them straight once the tights are on, there is a bit of a 'localised' chafing issue from time to time at the place where leg stops and other things begin. Anyone found a way around this, other than Sudocreme? Prevention would be better than cure. Wonder if briefs would be more appropriate, or some people have mentioned some kind of padded shorts to wear under the tights? Tights and briefs? Its all wrong...

Do your tights have a Chamois in them?

Your bottom layer should always be a set of lycra shorts with a Chamois - and no you dont look a tit because you just wear baggies or what ever over the top. Its the bottom layer that counts, the one in contact with your bits.

I have 2 pairs of those.

Never have any ass problems anymore.

It's must be nice to know you can make a comment like that in Pedal Powered without it being taken out of context. Same comment in P+P could have been interesting!

I agree though, I have just bought some Enduro Humvee 3/4's and although the lining could be a bit better they are really comfy, but without undercrackers of any type. I am still getting used to placing everything in the right place on my commute but it is certainly comfier.

come to think of it, my endura baggies came with a lined short that has been stuck in the bottom of my wardrobe since, snotrag, I see that there is a version of the endura shorts with the quickclick or whatever it is called, so I'll get some of those in, in the summer when I can ditch the tights I'll click them straight under the shorts. can't wait for some warm weather riding and ditching the waterproof jacket!

If you already have some then just ditch the boxers and put the liners on under your tights.

Waiting for summer to wear shorts, get a grip man! Agree about the waterproof jacket though, I hate wearing mine, when I take it off its soaked on the inside but I suppose better than getting soaked all the time.

Get some good quality shorts and never wear boxers/briefs under them defeats the purpose, if you still get chafing use a chamois cream, when it's cold stick a pair of leg/knee warmers on.... I use this system all year round... I find thermal tights too warm unless it's totally baltic!

ah but my thread topic was what to wear under tights, not what to wear under shorts. The tights (they are DHB ones) still have the same (or at least it looks similar) padded insert that many shorts do, so the question really is do you wear padded shorts against skin, within the padded tights (and in place of boxer shorts), or do you just wear the tights on their own (hope I would remember when I strip off in the locker room...)? its been minus two the last two mornings, so knee warmers not quite up to the job (and I have slightly dodgy knees, so like to keep 'em toasty.

If they have a padded insert built-in, then they're designed for wearing commando.

The other comments pertaining to padded shorts apply equally to the tights in this scenario.

Get yourself a Paramo mate. They're pretty expensive but you won't believe how breathable their waterproofs are, or how waterproof they are.

the problem for me is when you wear a rucksack, as I have to on my commute, until I get panniers at least. I have a Berghaus Demigod cycling jacket, whcih is brilliant without the pack, but with it, even with the vents fully open, it can't do its job. I have heard great things about paramo, walking rather than cycling, but I suspect the problem would be the same - if you have a weight pressing the material against you and the material can't breathe, you are going to get condensation. Best get the panniers I suppose!

Serious riders pay a lot of attention to the interface between machine and person, ie. the saddle and the bum! Everyone is unique and the choice of saddle is important. Just as important is the choice of shorts. The saddle area does have a propensity to harden up but needs to be looked after otherwise a saddle sore will develop.

It does not matter whether you are a fanatical club rider or commuter, there is a need to look after the nether regions.

IMHO, buy the best shorts you can afford. They require washing - often, which means you may need more than one pair. The same goes for your saddle area. I believe it to be unwise to just whip off the shorts and climb into your shreddies without washing yourself. A occasional, miniscule amount of Sudo Cream after washing would not come amiss either. At work, hanging shorts up to air may not be possible, we don't want the females going rampant with all those pheremones wafting about, (remember "Porky's&quotwink

Paniers is obviously ideal but a good halfway house is a rucksack with decent air channels.

I had a basic LifeVenture rucksack that MrsV6 bought me ages ago and it always gave me a really sweaty back. I've recently changed it for a large Camelback with the 'air director' back panel and the problem is greatly reduced.
