Went out for a quick ride on the Cove today, and after about 10 mins noticed some strange groaning noises coming from the left crank arm. It's a Shimano Deore.

Was half expecting it to give up the ghost and break, but i kept on and did the rest of my ride, albeit taking it easy. When i got home, i just thought i would check the tightness of the bolt going into the left hand arm, and sure enough it was loose (ish). So i tightened it up and it was fine after that.

So, i was wondering, is it normal for a crank to come a little loose and need tightening? Should these be checked periodically?

To start with - you ride a Cove. Legend, what model?

I had a bike where the crank arm kept coming loose. If you ride with a loose crank arm expect to replace the crank arm/ BB in the near future.

Could be...the crank arm wasn't done up tight enough. Regularly check to see if bolts are tight.

Crank arm going. Personally it's a cheap Deore arm so I would upgrade it any how! XT and above I'd recommend.

BB going.

Is it all square taper or ISIS?

yeah you do need to check isis and tapered crank bolts regularly, they have the potential to come loose,

i nearly did not live down the shame many years ago when riding on dartmoor in a group, when a noisey crank developed in to non drive side falling off, luckily found the bolt as was climbing up steep hill when it fell off, so was able fit and tighten it back on (Truitiv ISIS), but had the p*** taken out of me for ages untill a mates single pivot FS bike snapped when he lost the pivot bolt fell out while ridding, as he stared at it in disbelief trying to work out what was wrong, all memorys of my crank arm faded.

So check those bolts.

you have good taste, Coves are very cool.

(i have 2 Coves) wink

Ride a G Sport myself. Just not 100% on whether to change my front fork to a newer longer travel model or not.

Cool, what fork do you have at present and year?

and what are you thinking of changing too.

I have a 160mm u turn coil rock shox lyrik's on my Stiffee, they are really good and much improved over the marzochhi Bombers i used to have on it.

It's a Cove Stiffee i have, and it is a wonderful bike. And yes it is a tapered Shimano Deore crank, and the noise was coming from the none drive side aswell. Will eventually put an XT crank on there, but if there is nowt wrong with the current Deore then i may as well keep using it for now.

Cheers for your responses - i must check my nuts and bolts more often

I have 130mm Marzocchi Freeride SL Doppio Air (or something like that!) at present. Fantastic forks. Never let me down and nothing wrong with them.

Just the frame is recommended to ride with 140mm (only 10mm difference I know) but it's an excuse for an upgrade.

I want to keep the bike able to do single track XC and some downhill. Been to Wales quite a lot recently, at the Cwmcarm downhill track.

So was thinking about some All Mountain forks from Zocchi or similar from the other top brands. I haven't know which model is for what gene of riding since they changed the whole model line up a few years back.

I've a Fifth Element on the back.

Square taper is old tech now and this was a common problem with the crank wiggling free.

I'd upgrade the BB to ISIS and some new cranks on there soon.

there are so many forks you could chose, i prefer marrzochhi and rock shox over the others, did see some new marrzochi long travel single crown forks the other day, my friend was going to put them on his G spot, but was still undersided, they were v light, with titanium stachions. nice.

i went for lyriks as my bombers were not quite as good as they once were and a friend offered to buy them, my new forks are stunning, even 6 months on.
