I am after a specialized Enduro , S works, etc I don't want an out and out down hill because I will be doing mostly XC on hilly terrain but there are some good down hills also. I am 5'10'' and want to know do I need a medium or large frame.

I think you could ride either.Measure from the centre of the crank/bb to the top of the seat where your sit bones rest(my guess is you would be about about 730mm)This determins your body length, or if you have real long legs which at 5,10 would mean you have a short reach.
Always ride the smallest frame you can but don't go too small that you have to have longer than a 130 stem(road bike 140mm given no way out head angles)
Short reach, go for the medium, long reach go for the large....at a guess without seeing you ride :-)

most importantly, ride what feels best for you, not what a text book says as we're all different.

Thanks for the reply, I am after something off fleabay so I wouldn't have the chance to try it out, I might go into a bike shop and see what feels best.

I'm 5' 10" and ride a medium Stumpy. The large would have been comfortable to ride, but the medium offered more control. In my opinion the medium would be the way to go, especially for the downhill riding.

Just what I was going to say. I was concerned about getting a small frame over a medium when I bought my bike before christmas and it's taken a little getting used to it but now I have I find it's brilliant to have the extra control and chuckability of the small frame underneath me. I'm 5'8" with a 29" leg BTW.

I am 5 11 and a bit ...! The medium was too short for my upper body. But I am sure if I was an inch or two shorter then the medium would have been the way to go.

I'm 6'2 and i ride a medium with a 780mm leg length and a 120 stem, but i'm well odd, with short arms, no neck and too many years riding with my chin on the bars silly

i think the rule is to always err on the side of the smaller frame if you are in between. best to try em both, and sizings do vary between bike manufacturers

I am interested in this bike, I am guessing it will be OK for mainly XC but a bit of downhill on route

I have a specilized FSR XC in Medium and I am 5'11". I am right on the limit for the frame size, however do have a relatively short indide leg for my height. There is plenty of seat post left in my frame however, and I have ridden both the M and L frames. I prefer mine to be honest and think you will be fine with either size. As magazines have reported in the past, there is quite a jump between the medium and large frame sizes, and it seems to awkwardly bridge the peak of the bell curve of population sizes.
