I've been thinking about doing this for a while now and since the season is about to begin, I've decided to flog my old Fox Triad that came stock with my '06 Stumpy FSR and get myself a nice Fox RP23 rear shock to take the battering a little better!

At the same time, somebody (in passing), asked me if I was going to change the hollowlink to increase the travel of the rear shock......interesting scratchchin

So....does anyone know much about this and if it works well or messes up the bikes handling?

My S-Ws FSR came with the BETD adjustable link giving 3, 4 and 5-inches of travel. In reality my frame isn't designed to do the stuff you'd use a 5-inch travel bike for so I keep it in the 3-inch hole.

You'd also need an adjustable travel fork to match the change in travel at the rear, else you'll muck up the handling.

If it's like the BETD link then it'll raise the BB and overall height of the bike too.

So basically in layman's terms, it's probably best to just stick with the shock upgrade and leave the link as it is?

If it were me I wouldn't bother - I would like to swap out the BETD link on my bike for the original item but it was lost by the previous owner.

The FSR is a good 100mm Trail bike anyway. It should cope competently with any Trail in the UK. If you feel that your riding is moving to more All-Mountain / Freeride then you'd be better buying a new bike - Commencal Meta 5.5 for example.

I can't afford another steed right now, but I'm cycling in some serious trails in Austria (where I'm living now). This summer I'm off to the Kona Bike park in Salzburg. It's apparently the biggest bike park in Europe.

Either way, if I were to upgrade I'd like to buy a SC Nomad frame from the US. I've got a mate who goes out there all the time so maybe for next season I'll upgrade. It's £700 so still a lot to save up. Especially since I have a wedding to pay for next year too rolleyes

That's one of the problems with bikes becoming more use specific.

It really depends on how good you bike skills are. If you use the bike to compensate for your shortcomings then an FSR isn't going to last very long in the tough stuff and vice versa. It can be an expensive hobby / pastime and it really is hard to find a 'do it all' bike. My Stiffee is close and with adjustable travel forks works very well from XC to AM/FR albeit with a weight penalty.

If you can get a Nomad frame for £700 including all import taxes, I'll be round to see you as soon as you want to give you the money ... Honestly! I will if you and your mate ain't jesting or misinformed. For that money, I don't care about colour just get me one! (white would be nice though smile)

OK, I underestimated the price. It was $1999 for the frame with a DHX 5.0 air shock. That's £999 to you and me. Still cheap as chips compared to the UK! Where the price with a DHX 5.0 shock is about £1899.

I'm planning to keep my bike running this year with the usual upgrade as required philosophy and buy a Nomad fram when the GF and I go Xmas shopping in the US at the end of the year. Best hand luggage money can buy.
