Talk me out of it?

Ok, you should get the On-One Scandal because it's a darn nice bike and it's the 'new superlight XC frame, designed for covering the ground at high speed' apparently. So yes, I agree you should get that instead of some run of the mill Specialized, Trek, Marin lump of metal.
Or have I missed the point here?

You guys are not helping.
Your past help now. You would have already justified your potential purchase and decided where it will fit in house/garage/shed. Probably thought about the new shoes you need and the different tools and clothing you need to acompany it. Also, I would have thought the routes and places you will ride it and how you will have to drink a few less pints on Friday night to be able to feel upto a ride on Saturday. Or was that just me?

Or see if On One will do one of the new Ti versions of the Inbred in the RtoW Scheme.
Be nice, but the frame alone pops the budget:drool here
£1,300 for a Ti-framed bike with full XT groupset looks good, even if you have to add forks to the price.
My bike-to-work shortlist now includes pretty much everything I can think of under £1k...
On-One Scandal
Gary Fisher Big Sur - or maybe an up-specced Hoo Koo E Koo
Merlin Malt 4
Orange EVO8
with the Spesh Rockhopper Pro as an outside choice - there's got to be some sense in a lifetime warranty.
Any favourites or other suggestions?
Its not suiatable for commuting on, but if you plan to use the scheme to get a fun weekend bike: Marin Rocky Ridge? £999
long travel fork up front (140mm I think?), relaxed geometry, ultra wide bars & short stem.. and apparently really fun and v. fast on single track / down hill..
It is however quite heavy though (just over 30lb), so its not going to be the quickest uphill. However, with some faster tyres I think it would make a nice weekend cross country bike.
Its on my list for when work brings back in the 'cycle to work' scheme.
